i'd have three kids, and they would later on be called the stockholm three. they'd invent a new genre. one of them would be called elevator, another one innovator, and the third would be named godfather of said genre.
my dad influenced me a little bit, seeing as he'd dj:ed for 20 years or so. his record collection has a fair bit of old classic chicago and acid wax, although it's mostly top 40. too bad. |

| I listen to edm around my daughter all the time in the car and at home so I wouldn't be surprised if when she grows up she is a hardcore howells or burridge fan lol |

Only gayish teenagers (for boys) listen to Madonna and Ace of Base when they are 15-16, i remember listening to black and doom/death-metal (alongside some electronic music such as Orbital lol)back in 1996 when i was 15...but maybe its just Europe (or Europe in the 90s)...
To the thread-question now, i don't think that you can actively influence your kids to like a specific type of music. In a matter of fact, you can't influence your kids at anything, because, mental development is quite of a chaotic process. It is true though that when organisms (e.g. monkeys!) are exposed to a certain soundscape when they are young, they would tend to seek similar/idential soundscapes when they are older. Looking within their brains also reveals that certain neuronal areas which are functionally specialised to respond to certain sound frequencies, are "expanded" when those frequencies correspond to that early soundscape (that is, the areas which are functionally specialised to respond to those specific early frequencies become larger and more complex).
So it is true that the early musical environment influences preferences up to a certain point. It is also true though that humans are dynamic entities, so when it comes to the development of cognitions and behaviour, nothing is linear or clear-cut . So, yes, there is always the possibility that your kid will end-up liking something very different in comparison to your tastes.
I would personally never influence my children's musical taste. In a matter of fact, i'm not sure what kind of music i'll be prefering myself. My musical taste is currently quite different from what it was a few years ago (and so on, although i always liked some specific "patterns" regardless of the genre), so no one can ever be be sure. |

i wouldn't try to force my own musical tastes on my kids.
i'd like them to like good music though, not some smurf bull. so as long as they listen to music that is good, i will have no problems. but if they listen to bull crap, daddy's gonna get mad! :whip: |

Oh yeah, and big +1 on this!
When I was 15-16 we spent our whole time listening to punk and metal.
Groups like Pennywise, Millencolin, Fear Factory, Opeth and Korn. |

We had music playing at our home all the time and it most definitely affected my musical tastes. I inherited the love for classic rock from my dad and he even introduced me to EDM via Kraftwerk, Art Of Noise, Yello and others like that. It worked the other way too - he sometimes borrowed my Prodigy albums etc.
Still, I listen to a lot of stuff my parents would never ever listen to so I don't think you can completely influence your kid's tastes... |

I was 15-16ish when they released their 'flowers' album.. thats the only one i bought of them.. and madona was 'ray of light'.. ricky martin one was one just before world cup - 'liva la licoda' or somthing like that.. and enrique one was 'hero' and one album of his i think before that too i dont remember name of that one..
And threadstarter your question is way more sensitive and sophisticated than just another simple question as you might like it to think. Un-intentional influence is another thing, but you said you wanna 'conciously influence' their music taste.. so... |

Um yeah, it was the Happy Nation album (their first) I listened to. I also got Ray of Light but that was when I was 18-19. Ricky Martin and Enrique, no way :) (you're a girl right?)
I'll make sure my kids gets to hear more than just the top40 etc. And sure I'll play them what I like and have enjoyed the last 15 years. |
