It means spending a few thousand dollars on a suit. ;)
Unless you're an artsy-fartsy type. Then you can show your sophistication by disobeying the terribly bourgeois conventions of dress.

I interviewed for a job with a CEO and the guy was a gamer too, so he was cool as hell. I didn't get the job, but he was quite a relaxed, laid back, cool guy.
And do you know the CEO of valve through someone or something? |

I used to work for an indy gaming company that is now doing business with Valve through Steam. I'm still very good friends with my previous boss and he still invites me to a number of conferences and technical demonstrations with his invitational passes(which is where I'd encounter Gabe), but lately, I just don't have the time with school and work.
In fact, I met Gabe before his company blossomed and got to talking with him for about half an hour, as it seemed he was just another gaming nerd blogger on the show floor. |

I 100% agree here. When someone talked about sophistication 20 years ago it referred to their dress, demeanor, intelligence, mannerisms, etiquette, etc. Not the kind of car they drive. Now people use the excuse of saying a Ferrari is stupid because it isn't practical. That is just an absurd reason because you don't buy one for practicality nor is it made to be. |
Yeah I see sophistication as more of an attitude than anything else. It's like a form of politeness, good social etiquette. I can think of maybe 2 or 3 people I've met in my life I could easily associate the word with, but I could not tell you specifically why. |

lol I personally find that really horrible mean and crass humor the ing best. If the joke is either racist or ed up, then it is good in my book. :D |

She said a car wasn't sophisticated enough, but what constitutes sophistication? Is this really just another one of those social representations of wealth or intelligence? |
Yup. There's nothing special about the concept of "sophistication", it's just a social construct that refers to a cultural entity (which is a peculiar kind of universal). |

Quite agree, horrible, racist or sexist humor is the best, but as with everything else, there is a proper time and place to tell it. For instance if i would be walking around one day and i found myself near a feminist rally i wouldn't dare say this joke:
Why is it sad when you see a woman with two black eyes?
Because she didnt get it when she was told what to do the first time.
or this one
Why are there more women than men on earth?
Because there is more stuff to clean than there is to dirty up.
or even this one
What do you do if your woman nags you in the living room.
You shorten the chain that's tying her to the oven.
But since i know that the core is full of sick, dirty minded people with a twisted sense of humour i don't have a problem with saying that.
EDIT: also is Gabe playing WoW there instead of working on HL :whip: No wonder it takes ages for them to release anything.
And of course the GTR isnt sophisticated, its fiddly. Im not saying that its not good, but its not sophisticated. A boy racer car cant be sofisticated. |

I don't think that sophistication can be reduced to just wealth. There are plenty of wealthy people that practically nobody would call "sophisticated." Paris Hilton, for example.
I'm surprised at how quick people are to accept economic reductionism and facile pseudo-Marxist "analysis" of social concepts.
I think of sophistication as broadness of knowledge, particularly of how to comport yourself "acceptably" in all sorts of social situations, combined with thoughtful but confident interaction with others. |
