Man, woman shot in Annex

Hundreds of shocked café patrons were startled by the sound of gunfire last night in Toronto's Annex neighbourhood, where a man and a woman were shot.
Patrons said they heard four or five shots at about 11 p.m. and then saw a bleeding man staggering and calling for help as the gunman fled on Brunswick Ave., north from Bloor St.W. Witnesses said the man appeared to be clutching the side of his chest where a blood spot grew larger"
"I've been shot, I've been shot," the man was heard saying as he held his side. Patrons at the By-the-Way Café were ushered inside from the patio moments later, as the man collapsed on the street near the café.
A woman was also struck in the ankle by a bullet. Both were taken to St. Michael's Hospital as the intersection filled with passersby trying to see what happened. It was unclear whether the injured were the intended victims or bystanders hit by stray bullets.
Police closed Bloor St. from Walmer Rd., about three blocks west to Borden St., and cordoned off the intersection where the shooting occurred.
"This is crazy. There are hundreds of people around here," a café patron, who identified himself only as Julian, said.
Police were questioning numerous witnesses who said they saw the suspect go north on Brunswick in the company of two other men and a woman. The group was then seen running east on Lowther Ave. from Brunswick.
Initial reports said the shooter was wearing dark shorts and a light green T-shirt.
It was the second shooting in Toronto Thursday night. A man was shot and killed on Mornelle Crt., near Ellesmere Rd. and Morningside Ave., at 6:45 p.m., the city's 31st homicide. |

Crime down in Toronto
http://www.thestar.com/News/GTA/article/462663

Greater Toronto is the safest large metropolitan area in the country, according to a report released yesterday by Statistics Canada.
Among urban areas with a population of 500,000 or more, Toronto residents reported fewer crimes per capita than residents of Montreal, Vancouver and Ottawa. Winnipeg had the highest crime rate, followed by Edmonton.
It is the first time that Toronto has scored last place when it comes to crime in the country's biggest cities. That spot is usually reserved for Quebec City, which reported the lowest crime rate of any large metropolitan area every year from 1991 to 2006. In 2007, however, Quebec City reported 4,524 crimes per 100,000 people, compared to Toronto's figure of 4,461.
It contradicts what seems to be a growing public perception that Toronto is rife with random violence – like the death of John O'Keefe, killed by a stray bullet on Yonge St. in January; or Hou Chang Mao, killed in gunfight crossfire a few days later in East Chinatown; or Dylan Ellis and Oliver Martin, shot dead in their SUV in front of Trinity Bellwoods Park in June.
"Unfortunately, people's perceptions are often created around a single incident or a series of incidents over a short period of time," Police Chief Bill Blair said yesterday. "That can create an impression that this is not a safe city."
BY THE NUMBERS
11
Percentage decrease in the rate of Criminal Code offences in the Toronto area, 2007 versus 2006
10
Number of years in a row Saskatchewan has reported the highest provincial crime rate
594
Number of murders in Canada in 2007, with roughly one in five happening in Toronto
94,029
Number of violent crimes in Ontario last year, compared with 902 in Prince Edward Island
0
Number of Quebec City homicides in 2007, the first murder-free year since recording began in 1981

Hordes of Annex hipsters watched in disbelief last night while police cordoned off the intersection at Bloor St. W. and Brunswick Ave. and questioned witnesses about a shooting that took place at 11 p.m., wounding two young people.
People sitting on patios at the Future Bakery and the By The Way Café said they heard four or five gunshots and watched as a young man staggered south down Brunswick Ave., clutching his bleeding chest and collapsing in front of the café on Bloor St.
The man, who police say is 20, and a second victim, a 21-year-old woman, told police they became involved in an altercation with their shooter before he drew a handgun and discharged several bullets. The woman was struck in the foot and fell on Brunswick Ave., north of the intersection.
Marc Biginelli, 21, had stepped out of TRANZAC on Brunswick Ave. and was standing on the corner talking to his girlfriend on his cell phone when he saw four or five men walking south toward the intersection. The suspect, whom police describe as a black male between 25 and 29 years old with a medium build and short black hair, approached the group from behind and opened fire, Biginelli said.
Biginelli said the suspect was “very tense, very aggressive” and wearing a baggy black T-shirt and baggy jeans. It was surprisingly quiet after the shots rang out. “He didn’t scream, they didn’t scream,” Biginelli said.
Biginelli said the suspect ducked and hid behind a blue Ford van before fleeing north on Brunswick Ave. Police say a second person was also seen fleeing the scene.
It took witnesses a few minutes to realize what had just happened, in this safe and always crowded neighbourhood near the University of Toronto.
“My heart was beating a lot and I was like, f--k, this is real, for sure,” Biginelli said. Rae Matthews, 26, and Catherine McCormick, 25, were sitting on the patio of the Future Bakery when they heard the gunfire.
“Everybody just got down,” McCormick said. “It was actually kind of eerily silent.”
Both victims have been admitted to hospital and treated. Police say their conditions are unknown at this time. |

Per capita Toronto is probably still pretty low for all of those categories.... yeah you hear about murders/gun crime/violence every day pretty much here, but you gotta keep in mind that there are over 5 million people in the GTA. |

I just witnessed Toronto Crime.. :nervous:
So walking home I hear some guy yelling "hey hey dude are you okay?"... I look down the street and I see some shirtless man passed out in the sidewalk with 3 guys around him. As one guy is shaking him he diggs through the guys pockets and takes his cigarettes and wallet.... The passed out guy slowly starts to come to and they pretend to be all caring and concerned.... THEY JUST ROBBED THE DUDE!!!
Bahahahahaha I love toronto sketch
moral of the story... if you are going to pass out in the middle of the sidewalk make sure to leave all valuable at home |
