How are livesets recorded with the crowd noise at various points, yet still maintaining sound quality of the music? Is a special device used seperately?

i dont know for definite, but think they might hang condenser mics above the crowd, or at the front above the dj booth.

I do this a lot.
When I do it, its rec out from the mixer, then a couple of mics hung at a certain point in the room.
If you dont want to go to that hassle, you can put one mic into the mic input on the mixer channel, turn the mic channel up a little, and leave it somewhere out of the way- where it wont get knocked- and you will pick up crowd noise in the quiet bits.
Back in the days of vinyl, you used to be able to pick up crowd noise through the stylus but obviously that doesnt happen with cdjs now does it.

If there are MCs, then you have to factor that into the mix- ideally recording them seperately onto another channel as most have no ing idea about levels - which is why the DJM 800 is such a HUGE pain in the ass, as the rec out has the mic too.... no such problem with the A&Hs on which the rec out is just the music channels...
