so after this contract of mine is up in abt 5 months i would like to move to NYC. currently i live in LA at home with my parents.
i want to move for 2 reasons: jobs in my field pay more (there are also more of them and they are more interesting), and my social life here in LA is practically non-existent. i have very few friends and they're boring, and when it comes to women i've been on a dry spell for...oh the last yr. or so, lol.
i realize NYC is an expensive place to live but i would be happy living in a tiny room somewhere with a roommate.
anyway, if anyone has made the move from LA to NYC, i would like to hear your stories/suggestions... |

not from la but from the west coast originally. um nyc isn't the easiest of places to meet people. people seem focused on their business and go about their days. i know many transplants who feel its much harder meeting people here so don't expect to move and instantly have a gaggle of new friends.
also living in small places with someone you don't know isn't really "fun". it is hard enough living with the people you like let alone a stranger. as for salary, nyc is more expensive for sure. you may end up making more money but comparably you might be making less than you would in la plus there are so many damn hidden expenses you would least expect. overall, living here is a good experience but imo not one i would like to continue for more than another year or two. |

Moved here from DC almost 3 years ago. I used to live with my mum and moving here was a great way for her to realise I can handle my life on my own.
Some things I've found:
-Come to NY to visit and check it out for yourself, see if you would like to live here. It would suck to move your life to the other coast and end up hating it. Life here is very different from the west coast, or from anywhere for that matter and living in NY is not for everybody.
-It's easier to meet people here than anywhere else, you just have to be open and talk to people. Some of the people that I've met in the beginning are the ones that have helped me enormously when I've been in trouble in the first months living here and are my best friends (it's good to have a lawyer in your circle of friends, lol). There's this sense of solidarity and community here in NY that is not common elsewhere and it's one the things that I love about this city.
-Moving in with a friend is not always a good idea. Once you have a problem (cleanliness, schedule, pets, etc) it's very difficult to just get along, you can possibly even lose the friendship, and you need those when you are new in town. Remember you can always get a studio ;)
-If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere. There's been times that I've survived on ramen noodles and $2 slices of pizza for WEEKS. If you're concerned about rent, transportation, food, etc, make a budget and STICK TO IT, straight from the beginning. It's especially tough to get by in the first few months, so be ready for it, nothing will take the experience away of living in NY though, and you'll have a blast. :)
Good luck with any decision you make and let us know when you're around so we can meet you :) |

Yeah, it's one thing when you're here visiting, you love everything and you don't see other things that you see when you look at this city with other eyes (like when you're considering moving). A big plus for living here is not having to own a car. A lot of the money you save from gas, maintenance and insurance will go towards rent, though lol. If you know any people here in the city, it would be good for you to keep them posted about your plans, they'll prob end up being the ones you can rely on when a problem turns up.
