Saturday night around 8pm I walked outside to toss a watermelon rind over the fence line to get it out of the house. It was pretty dark, and I didn't have on proper shoes. I must have accidentally stepped on a nice little Copperhead. Results are as follows:

| The nurse was marking the swelling every hour, or so she said. In reality, I think they were trying to draw the 48 contiguous states from memory only. :D |

| Looks like your whole foot is due for amputation then. |

| The initial bite was extremely painful. It was much like a powerful wasp sting - the sensation of white, searing metal going into my skin. However, it was much, much more intense than an insect sting. As soon as I felt it, I suspected it was a snake. I held out hope, though, until I got back into the light. Wasps don't leave even spaced holes that bleed. :( The real pain from the swelling didn't set in until about 3 hours later. I had to stand up to urinate, and that's when reality set in, and I realized I would not be on my foot for several days. The bite didn't hurt bad on the way to the ER, but I must admit I was running on pure adrenaline at that point, so it's entirely possible that it was hurting but I simply did not realize it. Sheer stupidity. When you live in the woods, wear shoes and carry a flashlight. Sometimes stupidity catches up with us. I take full responsibility. |

It is best not to increase heart rate after a snake bite. Easier said than done I'm sure. |
