This is what they're looking at when they blast proton beams at each other. The straight lines are the particle beams. The swirly lines are the paths of the particles which emerge from proton collision. It is these subatomic particles the scientist seek to study. Quarks, gluons, meons, and even particles that exist only on paper, like Higg's boson, thought to be the thing that gives massless particles mass. And because gravity depends on mass, this particle holds the key to understanding a very fundamental part of the physical world. If the cosmological constants are changed by just a little bit, this universe would have no mass, no stars, no planets, no earth, no humans..

These scientists are working towards discovering what the universe is made of at the most elementary level of existence. I believe that be impossible because I think knowledge potential is infinite, we'll never know everything. THe more we know, the more there is to know..

I don't know that I'd say it's because potential knowledge is infinite, rather the opposite - that knowledge is finite as is all of existence (matter can neither be created or destroyed, and so on), but human beings are incapable of discerning for certain with any real confidence that they've reached the most "micro" level of things that exist.

It's just a logical impossibility to assume that with our physical capacities/limitations and from a single perspective we could distill existence into ones and zeroes - and depending on your perspective, it might be a practically impossibility as well.

This, however, doesn't mean the universe doesn't function in terms of so-called ones and zeroes, or fundamental "pieces" - just that we can never know for sure whether or not we've figured out what those pieces are.

Well, if you believe in the multi-verse, this universe is just one in an infinite number of universes. These universes can not communicate with each other, and assuming the multi-verse is a reality, we'll never know all there is to know about what exists.

Also, the law of the conservation of matter and energy has one flaw. If matter and energy can not be created or destroyed, why does it exist in the first place? Something can't come from nothing.

That's one scary picture... Think I'll have to gouge my eyes out with a rusty spoon.
