Audio interfaces help and recommend please!

im currently updating my small home studio... i just bought a quad core 4 gb rem thingy... and now my next step is better vocal/guitar/brass recording process... now i own an E-MU 0404 PCI, that has served me well in the past 3 yrs. but i feel its time to move on, i see loads of people use firewire cards, and as i understand those are slower then PCI ones... but they come with built in preamps which save some budget... now i been looking into those stuff for the past 2 months and came up with those options, if anyone knows any of them and used it please contribute your opinion regarding it! i will greatly appreciate it!

RME Fireface 400
I'm mainly concerned about recording quality and latency for better workflow... oh and i work on a PC with Live 7, Thanks! |

If have the Saffire and have absolutely no complaints. I'm very satisfied with the recording of guitar quality. I've never used it for vocals - and it's been the only one I have used, so it's hard to compare though. I just know I'm very happy with it.
I also have a Godin guitar with 13 pin output for midi, which I run through an external Roland midi converter, and that is supposed to be notorious for latency. I've experienced no problems and using it with Ableton 6.
So, it's what I have and have no qualms recommending it. I read on the forum recently that Echofires are recommended by many as well. |

| only thing i have experience with is echo audiofire, which seems great to me. low latency, good drivers, good sound-quality, flexible, bla bla bal. i got the audiofire 12 and im superhappy with it. |

| i checked it out now... it looks good but than i came across their LAYLA3G, did you guys know about this thingy? is it any good? it looks like just what im looking for (PCI, Pre-amps, nice set of ins/outs)... |

| I am using the Saffire, I have used it for vocals and it sounds unbelievable how those preamps color the sound, in a good way. And with this interface I get lower latencies than any other that I have used. Works wonders for me.:D |

lets say with a near finished track with all the sounds running, how low can you get the latency to go? |

| Well near full track, for you might be different for me. You see I use Live and I freeze everything, so really it is hard to say. For me, I usually keep it at 10ms. If I am recording vocals or wanna get a really tight feel on the trigger finger I go as low as 6ms sometimes 5ms. Plus in the latency panel you can adjust your firewire buffer size to make the latency even lower if your computer can handle it. |

yea i know im gonna use it on a quad 2.4ghz w/ 4 gb ram, so i kinda wanna know what will be the performances generally... |

| Well I use many many vsts, in Live, and performance is never really an issue with the Saffire. My only problem ever is not enough ram. I run 2 gigs on dual core. I wish I had your system, eventually I will upgrade. I usually run a track count between 20 to 30, maybe. I use extensive effects to get my sound, so I may not use as many tracks as some of you guys. Like I said I almost always have it at 10ms, if the track count gets heavy and I wanna run way more synths live unfrozen, I may go to 20ms but, at this point I won't be playing on the keyboard anymore it will be more of processing the sound. The latency can obviously go way high if needed. Plus you can go up to 192khz on here if needed. Plus it is 64bit compatible if you wanna run a 64 bit machine. |

Yea but, I keep spending my money on these damned vsts! Well they are not damned but, I am addicted. Just bought Audio Damage- Kombinat today:disbelief
