disconnecting car battery

Ever since Guantanamo Bay, I've been dead afraid to touch my car battery.
I'm changing the oil right now and I want to clean out the acid from the car battery, but I'm a bit weary of it. Are there any Do's and Don'ts (i'm mainly asking for Don'ts)?

don't pee on it. Not that it will hurt it.

On second thought, go ahead and pee on the battery.

disconnect the negative first, then the positive. when you reconnect do it the opposite way. If its corroded clean the terminals with baking soda and water.

I think its like waterboarding but they use a blowtorch instead

Always handle the negative first.

That is, the negative line comes off first, and goes on first.

Also, clean the terminals and leads of corrosion and apply a generous coating of vaseline to the connections to prevent further corrosion.

If you aren't sure how to remove the battery, are you sure you want to be opening up the cell?

All good, just have the new battery ready and dont leave the car without a connected battery for too long.
dj_alfi
just yank the.. the.. yank the thang!
Superstring
Is there a reason why you want to handle the negative first?

EDIT.

However, if you're even in the least careful, it doesn't matter which cable you disconnect first.

Make sure you don't touch positive and negative leads at the same time.

it wont do anything. it only has 14 volts of potential. not nearly enough to draw a current through your body.

also when you remove the battery, dont put it on bare concrete/asphalt/ground. put it on some pieces of 2x4 or rubber. there is a ground plate at the bottom of the batter, and im not entirely sure how it works (an electrical engineer once explained it to me) but the battery will short itself out if you put it directly on the ground. It will actually kill your battery within an hour.
