Hey guys.
my pc no longer lets me click on the start button or the bottom right where the clock is. (the blue strip where the green start button is). when you click, it just make the annoying sound that remnids you that nothing is happening.
using the windows butto on the keyboard brings the start menu up but i want to be able to click.
anyone know what is wrong and how i can sort it? i just wanna make some music:( |

What kind of computer is it? Where did you buy it? So from what you are saying it sounds like everything works but you can't use your mouse? Is your mouse USB? The first thing I would try is unhook everything and then hook it all back up. If you are clicking and you are hearing a dinging sound that almost makes me thing something on the keyboard is stuck pressed or something.
Also you might have better responses if you post this in the technology and gadget forum.
Let us know more info and we will try to help. |

the pc was given to me by my brother. he formatted the hard drive and reinstalled windows xp using the authorisation code from my old dead pc.. the mouse is non usb (but worked up until today). i am getting the ding, but had a play with the keyboard and it all appears fine.. ill try unhooking everything now.. the pc worked fine until today. the last time i was on the pc i went on the internet briefly (for the first time on this pc) to check my ebay a few days ago. and i had no antivirus or antispyware. but i didnt touch one naughty website, only ebay so i somehow doubt i picked up a virus from there. |

Sounds like your "explorer.exe" task is locking up.
Hit CTRL-ALT-DEL, select "Task Manager", go to the "Processes" tab and end the task called "Explorer.exe". Some stuff might disappear from the screen. Then go to File > New Task (Run...) and type "Explorer.exe" to re-load it.
Start there and let me know if that makes a difference.
If that doesn't work, I would boot in safe mode and disable unnecessary startup items as something is probably causing it to lock up the taskbar. I can guide you through this also if necessary. |

Hit CTRL-ALT-DEL again and bring the task manager back up. |

| If its vista, then it has happened to me as well, what you need to do is do a backup and then just unplug the pc and turn it back on. it really is no problem not sure why it happens but i used to get it when i first started using vista. |

Okay then, something's definitely messing with the explorer.exe task.
I would boot into Safe Mode (after the initial POST/memory test when you power on, start tapping F8 until you see a menu which lets you select "Safe Mode"). Once booted into Safe Mode, go to Start > Run, and type "msconfig". This will bring up a window which you can use to disable startup items. You want to go to the "Startup" tab after selecting "Selective Startup Mode".

I would look through there and disable anything that you feel isn't necessary. A lot of times, programs will put "updaters" that run in the background constantly, for instance. If you expand the "Command" column a bit, you should be able to see what each item is pointing to. Nothing that you turn off in here should permanently disable your system, and if you lose some functionality, you can always turn it back on.
If you are super paranoid, however, you could try looking them up here, but meh.
Reboot.
When you log back in, it will warn you that it's running in "Selective Startup Mode". Just tell it to not remind you anymore and you should be set.
Let me know if this helps... |

cheers mate.
i just downloaded ad aware and avg. they found about 13 trojan downloaders and other nasties. how could these have got on there without me going on the types of websites they are usually associated with? the copy of xp was un updated and i was running with no antivirus. i been online once for about 10 mins. i was only on ebay !
could these have been stored on the external broadband modem from previous dirty surfing on my other computer and jumped over? im amazed how this new pc had so many.
ps. it was a formatted hard drive |
