PVD Live Sets (which of these are the best) (pg. 6)

Agreed. This is really *probably* my all-time favorite. The Mayday 2000 set came a week after this, and it's good, many of the same tracks, but I think the Home set has better energy and mixing overall.
There are just so many damn PVD sets and his style has changed progressively over the years of what type of tracks he likes to play.
Out of the 1999-2001 era I like the Home London set the very best. Alot of high energy sets came out of 2002 like Rosenmontagsrave, Columbiahalle, Love Parade, and Mayday...but again, it was a different type of record style he was laying down then. I don't think the overall skill in the set buildup, fluidity was as good. Some killer sounding tracks though.
Out of the Essential Mixes the 2003 12-21 mix is probably my favorite.
I got really disillusioned to the stuff PVD was playing from 2004-2007. Suddenly (2008) it seems he's resurrecting himself with a new sound, some killer tracks, not as much of the flaky-vocal or bang-bang hard dull-type tracks he was playing as fillers. Alot more really well contructed tracks, layered epic-sounding trance with alot of elements. That's the kind of stuff I like to hear...plus he is becoming well-skilled with Ableton can do some interesting stuff when playing live now. What I meant earlier, most of the sets 2004-2006ish were quite ty in my opinion...things started to get a tad better last year (2007), but I think he's back on on top again. I like everything I am hearing now -- (Reference sets: Vandit Night Kesselhaus, Space Miami WMC 2008, Mayday 2008, Nature One 2008) <--these sets speak volumes. Track selection is better, set energy is higher, buildups are better, overall the quality of his sets seem better. |

I'll agree with you that his track selection is significantly better in 2008. However, I would not even come close to saying that he's "resurrected himself". He's still far different than he used to be, and, in my opinion, not as good as he used to be.
I bought cream ibiza off your recommendation and thought it was much better than anything else he's produced recently. but, at the same time, didn't think there was a solid track on there. |

OK. agreed. He's also a decade older and refuses to spin on vinyl anymore. That was a different era indeed. I think that possibly with time we will see a transformation in the way the music is performed live (ie Ableton vs CDJ or decks) it will involve more live manipulation, more advanced live sampling, effects, and basically become a new animal. It's not the same as two records with a mixer with a fader, volumes, lows, mids, and highs.
So...I dunno. It's debatable for me. I think maybe having set tracks on a computer may take less skill that Handling real vinyl on the tables, which is a skill itself. Everything these days PVD-setwise is about taking the music and delivering it live, in a unique way, putting his spin on it and basically using the tracks as a base layer for a set and then building on that.
But again, it's not 2000 or 1993 or 2003, the way it's done live is not the same. And probably will never be (for PVD, at least we know) |

Yea. Interestingly enough, I remember reading an interview with Sasha, and Sasha said he loved the endless possibilities that Ableton gives him. He then went on to say that one time when he was forced not to use Ableton, he ended up doing what he said was a much better set. That meaning that he thought that he was a better DJ when he was only doing deck A to deck B mixing as opposed to live remixing on the fly. Just something to think about.
As for PVD. He is by far my favorite trance DJ and a producer I love. However, I have a hard time believing he'll be producing something I like anytime soon. He's just in a different place mentally right now. It's so easy to hear in the tracks he's picking. |

Seriously, I wouldn't want any DJ / producer to stay the same for more than a few years. Stuff gets redundant. I love what PvD is doing nowadays, he's producing his own style that is more defined in 2008 than ever. Hell, even Christopher Lawrence has changed. I saw him in 2007 and he played his traditional hard techno-trance set. Saw him again two months back and he played pure goa / psytrance, and he ing rocked!
I'm embracing the change here, is all I'm saying. And i holistically agree on the better track selections. |

Various torrent sites like mixingbowl, tribalmixes, trancetraffic, etc, might hold a few. Your best bet is probably google though. If you have a couple of specifics in mind I don't mind sorting you out, but my connection is limited so I can't do too much. |
