This was already posted in the Production forum, but I figured it might have some general interest as well...
"Paul's Extreme Sound Stretch" is a program that lets you stretch sounds up to hundreds of times their normal length:
http://sourceforge.net/project/show...45122/&abmode=1
Its stretching algorithm gives you a really smooth, continuous result rather than the choppy crap you would get if you tried to use most programs to do something like this. It works best on music with few loud drum sounds, as stretched drum sounds can sound pretty dissonant and harsh, but you can use it on anything.
Try loading up a short passage (five to thirty seconds or so) of classical music or jazz, or a breakdown from a dance track, stretching it out to like fifteen or twenty minutes, then just sitting back and letting it play. If you pick your source track right, you can get some really nice ambient sounds going in very little time. You can also render the stretched sound to hard disk and save it for future use. |

With the laziness that abounds among new producers today, I really can see some guy stretching out a bunch of already-released songs a couple hundred times and then calling it a "new album."

lol, not really. it's a very legitimate and awesome tool that will hopefully lead to new directions in music.
goal #1 for me is to make an ambient album out of 'never gonna give you up'
it's going to be called 'never gonna give you up, forever and ever' |

| I think this could be cool in a DJ set: have some dance tracks playing with very little melody going on, and then use this program to play some stretched-out ambient sounds just floating over the beat. |

it'd be cooler if you were sampling the records and running them through it
or sampling people in the bathrooms doing drugs |
