It isn't always a matter of whether or not the tune is actually good, because if it is good enough, I'll play it regardless. I can't, however, really get on board with a lot of stuff that gets "my biggest _______ tune" reviews from loads of people. I just feel like if everyone else has "been there, done that" what am I bringing to the table that makes me any different or unique from any number of other guys?
Sorry for the rant - just really seemed like a good post to join in on. |
Nobody ever made a name for themselves as a GOOD dj by playing everyone else's "big tracks" 3 months behind.
I'll look for my "big tracks" in back catalogs... :D
Also, I'm pretty much fine with being called an elitist snob ****rag whatever by idiots who can't tell the difference... |

Yeah - it's obviously a superficial and ignorant default insult when people can't take dissenting opinions. I guess I just finally felt capable of articulating that thought for the first time. :p |

Take a listen in order to give your aforementioned remarks with the slightest bit of credibility:

Maybe you should read the rest of the thread to get a more complete idea of people's positions before taking the time to rant at them?

Mother ******. This was a one page thread before I got to it.
Well, that's the end of that. |

It just isn't always "it's a bad track" - I just think it's hard for a lot of DJ's to get motivated about popular tracks not based on quality, but because they want to stand out, or feel like they've created their own sound.
I don't think that's always as clear as it should be though, hence my earlier post. ;) |

I'm just curious to know whether you ever listen to EDM tracks soley for listening purposes and not to dj. If so, do you still carry the above outlook while searching for music? |

Fair question for sure, I think it's very difficult for me to listen EDM tracks on their own without wondering whether or not I'd play them. Maybe it's a horrible measuring stick, but it's almost a reflex - something I can't control.
Exceptions would be on artist albums (I love EDM artist albums regardless of genre - everything under the sun) and mixed compilations (I don't hold other DJ's to the standards I hold myself to, it isn't fair), but as far as singles go I really don't expand too far beyond the things I'd like to play.
I will say, however, that I do listen to a lot of music without that kind of outlook at all - but as I said, that's almost always going to be artist albums from all over not just the EDM world, but just tons of different genres and styles in general. |

One of the curses of being a dj!
I suppose it comes with the territory, although I've never really had a problem myself being able to listen to the tracks by themselves and appreciating them. I'm pretty much the same way though, in that I try not to play a track if I know everyone else is but I will always play it for my own enjoyment outside of the dj booth. |

Well, I imagine this kind of marketing is aimed at two kinds of people:
1. Those who don't DJ.
2. DJs who make their money by playing the smash hits.
If we discount the latter as people who bring absolutely nothing of worth to any (turn)table, I suppose it's a fairly persuasive tactic. If a DJ you like has declared his support for the track, there's a decent chance you'll enjoy it yourself. |

| If you are a DJ you play the tracks you enjoy. There is a large overlap. It's not two separate spheres. |
