when looking for apartments, is it better to live in a smaller place in the middle of the everything or in a bigger/cheaper place outside manhattan?

up to you dude, that's like asking what's better chocolate or vanilla? :D

worth living in the city if you can afford it. sux when you can only afford living in the city and not much $ left for anything else.

it depends on if you want to have an 'escape' from the chaos that is new york city. I spent one summer living in manhattan and one in hempstead, long island.

it was definitely more relaxed living in hempstead. it was nice to be able to see grass and have a quiet place to lounge. and i lived in a house instead of an apt. it sucked leaving the club and having to fight all the long island kids for a spot on the LIRR back home though. and if I drove, parking was a pain in my ass, plus gas is expensive these days.

living in manhattan was really fun. Whenever my friends came to visit, I lived right there. no long train rides, no driving anywhere, nothing. plus i had a balcony overlooking 7th ave in chelsea, which was super nice. the downside for me was that I didn't accomplish much, because there was a delivery service for every drug imaginable. That sort of ed me over. Plus you are always going to hear commotion at all hours of the night. police and fire sirens, honking horns, people yelling, etc. LI was a lot more quiet.

as far as money is concerned, its definitely more expensive to live in the city. When I move back to NY next year (this time permanently) I'll hopefully, fingers crossed, be going to NYU. So I plan on living in manhattan. But after graduation I'll probably be looking to live in BK or Queens. its cheaper and not too far.

then again... harlem is not a bad place to live by any means these days and im pretty sure its not gonna cost you an arm and a leg. maybe ill move there, then I can whoop Jay's ass in chess live. UGH!!

the thing is, you get total for what you pay for in NYC.
there is no quality of living. i kno this having lived in Europe.
but, if you could afford living in manhattan, its quite the experience for an out-of-towner. I love NYC in the way its loved for best.
Many opt for living outside of manhattan, as the commute can only be a train ride away.
get nyce
