electronica ... such a horrible and pretentious word. lol, i wouldn't be surprised if the word was created by some money hungry record label trying to make it sound cooler.
it all started under the umbrella of TECHNO!

I don't really like the word Electronica either, but the problem with calling it ALL Techno is that Techno is also the name of a specific genre of electronic dance music, so it just causes confusion. "Do you mean the genre Techno or electronic dance music in general?"
In my view there are about six main parent genres of electronic dance music: House, Techno, Trance, Breaks, Jungle (or Drum and Bass, if you prefer), and Hardcore, each having plenty of sub-genres, of course. I supposed Hip Hop and Ambient could also be included...
House came first. Then came Techno. Since Techno was the first identifiably electronic/compurized sounding genre, I guess they started calling anything that sounded electronic Techno, even after new genres with different names started to develop and so it just kinda stuck over the years. At least that's my theory...

Yes. Mobyy does fall under electronic music category:
His style called Big Beat and it is a subgenre of Epic Trance. Fatboy Slim falls into same category. So yes, Moby is techno |

Because Moby said on one interview that the only people who listen to Eminem are 10 year old kids.
(Quite hilariously, this months MixMag responds "Yeah, but that's just because 10 year olds are too embarrassed to listen to Moby's crap)

That's a joke, right?
Big Beat is a subgenre of Breakbeat, NOT Epic Trance.
Techno is techno, it has nothing to do with Moby OR Fatboy Slim OR Big Beat...
Moby's current style could be described as "chillout", although it's not chillout as such, more like a mix of styles...
Personally, I think Moby's genre is "", but that's just an opinion :D |

Moby is definately NOT Big Beat... Big Beat is a style of Breaks that the Chemical Brothers made popular... and it's definately NOT a subgenre of any kind of trance, that's for damn sure.
Some Prodigy and Crystal Method may be considered Big Beat too, but don't quote me on that... They're definately Breaks tho... So the most "mainstream" electronic music (at least in the US) seems to usually be of the Breakbeat variety, which makes sense cuz that's the closest beat structure to Rock and Hip Hop (in a sense), which people are used to.

| Moby ... bah ... sure there's been a couple of good remixes by proper dance producers, but Moby's music in its original form is best classified as "easy listening" in my opinion ... gentle coffee table music to be played in the background at hairdressing salons ... it sets my bloody teeth on edge :wtf: :eyespop: |

I believe somebody else mentioned Moby's old track "1000" already. Pretty easy listening. ;)
Seriously, Moby was a pioneer, transcending all genres. I have the highest respect for him as a musician because he's done everything he's tried well! |
