iTunes/Scratch Live/Live question

Hey there got a question for you all.

I currently (and for years now) have been using iTunes to manage my files on my MacBook Pro. I just find it easy since I use iTunes only to play my music. Thus iTunes manages the files for me.

That being said, I've introduced two new programs into the mix; Serato Scratch Live and Ableton Live. I now have a couple of questions...

1. What does the "build overviews" function in Serato Scratch Live (SSL) do? I have a 4800+ song library and I accidentally clicked on that once and it took 12 hours to complete! I'm not going to click on it again until I know what it does. Does it alter my MP3 files in any way, or does it create some sort of database without effecting the actual MP3 file? One thing I did notice is that after doing that some of my album artwork on some MP3s are missing???

2. Do I have to worry about Ableton Live (AL) messing up my files and/or interacting with these two programs? I know that when I warp a file it creates another .ASD file in the same folder. As far as I know I only need to worry about not changing the file name, otherwise I can just drag/drop the .ASD file to wherever iTunes keeps my MP3 file. Correct?

Anything else I need to know/be concerned about?

Thanks,
Keith

Build Overviews is a GOOD THING!!! Actually, it's recommended that you do this to every track. Several things happen during BUILD OVERVIEWS. The main thing, it checks to make sure your file is not corrupted and it won't crash Serato. If after building overviews you notices a little symbol on the left side with a lightning bolt through it, it means the file is corrupted and it can crash your Serato. Take it off the library, and fix it.

Another major thing that happens is that serato adds the BPM to every track while building the overviews. Before you build the overviews, make sure you select the BPM range that best fits your music style.

And last, if you click on the BUILD OVERVIEWS button, it will build the overviews for your entire library. If you just want to build overviews for just a few tracks, highlight that particular track and drag it over the BUILD OVERVIEW Button.

I forgot to mention.

When building overviews, Serato will adjust all the levels (track volume) to your desired volume. That means all the songs will have the same volume. You can select your desired volume on Serato's preferences. I'm not sure if this alters the MP3, or if it writes it in the tags. I'm pretty sure it writes it in the tags, as that is the only thing that serato alters to any Mp3.

Other than that, you should be able to use your MP3s on both Serato and LIVE. I do it all the time. Both are non destructive.

Thanks DJWoody for the info. If I do the "build overviews" again will it only adjust the new files, or will it go through all of them again? I'm not entirely sure which ones I've added since the last time I've done the entire library.

Also how do I find/set my desired volume? With some many parts of my setup it's hard for me to narrow down the right volume...

It will only adjust your new files.

Any idea why my MP3s are showing up "weird" in SSL... For example I use iTunes to edit my tags and always put the source of the file in the comments section (like "source: vinyl" for example) however in SSL randomly some of the files say "source: vinyl" and others say things like "trance -" or "minimal - minimal". I think these other comments were the original comments from beatport before I edited them.

Any ideas? It seems SSL is not reading my tracks entirely correctly...

Thanks,
Keith
