Legal question (US elections related)

Just out of curiosity. What's the legal status of the election winning presidential (+VP) candidate between the elections and the inauguration? What I actually wanna know is what happens if the election winner is not able (for whatever reason *cough*) to enter the White house on Jan. 20th. Does the succession rule of the VP apply or are new elections immediately required?

It appears the same line of succession applies for the president-elect as applies for the president. (VP, speaker of the house, etc...). The VP would then be able to appoint a new VP.

quote:

In case of the removal of the President from office, or of his death, resignation, or inability to discharge the powers and duties of the said office, the same shall devolve on the Vice President, and the Congress may by law provide for the case of removal, death, resignation or inability, both of the President and Vice President, declaring what officer shall then act as President, and such officer shall act accordingly, until the disability be removed, or a President shall be elected.
