Best price for good studio foam?

I'm trying to find out where the best price for studio foam would be. Guitar Center has a decent price for 2X4 at $27.99 a panel. Online however, I'm not sure what the best deal is because it depends on thickness, quality, and size. I'm pretty new to this so anyone who is a pro at this and wants to school me like a naiive noob it would be appreciated.

[edit] I feel that perhaps foam panels are priced higher when geared toward Studios. I found a website that has a "Convoluted Foam Mattress" which looks like the same material but onlt $21.99 for 32" by 72". Check it out: HERE Is this just not as good because the density of the material might be lighter?

Yes... they have certain density and pore count requirements.

If you are going to buy foam, you must buy actual brand name (reputable) accoustic foam. Standard foam or crap accoustic foam will not do anything.

Truth be told, foam isn't really the best material anyway, it is just the easiest to sell. If you're prepared to do a bit of work, you can get superior results using home made rockwool panels.

This is along the lines of what I plan on doing at home: http://afarawayland.blogspot.com/20...-703-rigid.html

That is essentially what I use at work (although in the form of Ready Acoustics panels), and can say that it works quite well.

Although this is very easy to do, I don't think this is the best design.

AFAIK, it is far better to use an open front/back frame, rather than what he has done here. Then, by optimising the air gap from the wall, you can probably almost double the effectiveness of the panel.

Oh.. yeah, you're completely right. I didn't realize he was covering the entire backside with wood. I just went off the FG panel and posted the link.

So yeah... that, but frame the outside or something, not the backside. That's what the ready acoustics stuff I've used does.

were is this studio going? is it in your bedroom or ya making a loft conversion or summat....how much room you got for it???
djsessem
stud the room out twice leaving at least 25mm gap in between the studs.... use rockwool in between every stuf then on the second stud use kingspan....costly but good!!!!

I'm actually in the market as well... do those guys sell any foam in less than a 12 piece box?

I don't have very much input on foam and prices but a general thing to think about is that it takes so much more than just adding a few foam panels to get a good acoustic result from the room.
It takes the right placement, the right use of the right type of panel and so on. It's not impossible but it takes some research to get it 100% right :)

When it comes to thoose panels though, a cheap way to do it that works very well is to build the panels 100% by yourself. Build a wooden frame, fill it with the same typ of isolation material that you use in houses and cover it up with some kind of heavy cloth... voíla ;)

If you in it for the Studio construction & acoustics go here

http://www.gearslutz.com/board/forums/

Then you see section called Studio construction & acoustics go there and there usually 4 big people in the acoustics field reply to threads there. That how I came across to build my studio room before it totaled by fire. That was sound proof from leaking sound and at same time it was acoustically sound with diffusers and other acoustics materials and had bass traps.

mmm gearslutz...the one and only place for the serious people! There's no reason in the whole world not to love that place! :D
