Basically, this is the place to discuss anything MMA related - UFC, WEC, Affliction, Elite XC, Bodogfight, TUF, etc...

Since it doesnt look like there is one here, Im gonna take the honors of creating one. And to start it off, Ill just repost what I posted in the UFC 88 thread.

Well, this is an interesting debate.

First off, the fact that Brock is fighting Couture for the belt is total horse , the guy hasnt proven anything and is fighting for the title, when it should be Nogueira or Mir fighting for it.

Second point why this is horse ... its a terrible match up for Randy after taking over a year off from fighting. This is Dana White being the prick he is to set up Randy for a loss and boost Brock.

Onto the fight, me and my friends have a little debate on this, because I have one group that thinks Brock's power will win the him the fight by decision after 5 rounds, just by sheer strength and weight of keeping Randy on the ground. Then theres my belief that Randy's experience is gonna play a big role in this because Brock has to fight 5 rounds, and I doubt he has the conditioning to last that long. Look at how tired he was after 3 rounds against Herring, and Herring hardly really fought back. On top of that (not to take anything away from Brock) Randy has over a decade of ring experience, plus all the Greco-Roman experience on his side. Furthermore, Randy is a small heavyweight and is used to fighting guys that are bigger than him. Alot of people think that the only way Randy will win is to submit Brock (or by decision), but what people dont realize is that Randy doesnt have such good submission skills, if anything theyre as good as Brock's, but again he has the edge in experience, so that could get Brock to fall into a routine submission.

My call on that fight... Randy wins by TKO in the 4th round as a result of the dirty boxing and Brock getting tired.

I'm going to take the plunge and actually talk MMA on a forum after I swore I never would again.

I agree with you. I see the match up between Lesnar and Couture as a pay-per-view numbers game more than a legitimate title bout between a champion and the #1 contender because in my eyes Lesnar is NOT the #1 contender. Sure Lesnar has the raw power and a name to sell 500,000+ ppv buys but IT IS a slap in the face to Nogueira. The UFC is still an infant compared to the NFL, MLB, NBA etc, so I understand that White is capitalizing on the opportunity to draw in more casual MMA fans but he also must keep in mind that he is running the risk of losing dedicated MMA fans if he keeps this BS up.

Now onto the actual fight.

Once again, I also agree with you. Lesnar is going to weigh in at a dehydrated and cut 265 but is going to swell back up to 275, possibly as high as 280 while Couture is going to come in at 230 max. Lesnar is going to overpower Couture in raw muscle on the ground and Couture knows this. I see Couture keeping it on the feet and making it his fight, not Lesnar's. Couture completely dominated Silvia despite Silvia having a one foot reach advantage and I think the same Couture that fought Silvia will be the one we see against Lesnar. We haven't seen Lesnar take a punch so who knows what to expect. Lesnar might be the new James Thompon and end up taking a nap 30 seconds into the first round. I think Lesnar will try to stand with Couture because he feels like he has something to prove to all the people who think he doesn't deserve this fight but Couture will out box him and Lesnar will start attempting to take the fight to the ground half way into the first round. Couture has to keep stuffing the take downs and work his dirty boxing while staying away from Lesnar's punches.

Lesnar's showing against Herring didn't impress me much. His wrestling is spot on but this isn't an NCAA championship match. Lesnar seems one dimensional to me because he didn't show that he could integrate anything else into his wrestling. Sure he throws big punches but so did Tank Abbot. Lesnar had countless opportunities to submit Herring but he didn't seem to even notice his openings. The Herring fight should have never gone past the 2nd round but Lesnar lacks the experience and training to reach his full potential at the moment.

I predict Couture TKO'ing Lesnar with strikes late into the 2nd or 3rd round.

BTW, I didn't know there were any real MMA fans on TA other than myself.

Well since this is the MMA thread I guess I should spread the gossip. Anyone else heard the rumor that Affliction rescheduled "Day of Reconing" to January for a Tito vs. Fedor fight?

Ortiz and Affliction prepare major announcements

Thoughts? Opinions? Trash talk?

I just saw the news that the October Affliction card was cancelled, which disappoints me because I was looking forward to seeing Arlovski vs. Barnett. Which again, I have a disputed opinion of the fight with my friends. Barnett is a great shoot fighter, but I think if the Arlovski we've all come to know and love shows up, Barnett will be eating fists all night.

But I didnt hear anything about Tito vs. Fedor... which if it is done... is just not gonna be a fun fight to watch. Sure it'll be exciting to take bets on how fast Fedor will end it, but its no competition. Tito lacks the desire, the youth and especially the strength to compete with him. Fedor uses people like rag dolls, hes so powerful its just... abnormal... which is why he is rightfully known as 'The Russian Experiment'

Golden Boy, Affliction put boxing, MMA on cards
By GREG BEACHAM, AP Sports Writer
Sep 13, 4:16 pm EDT

LAS VEGAS (AP)—Golden Boy Promotions will put boxing matches and mixed martial arts fights side-by-side in a new partnership with Affliction, the fledgling MMA promoter run by an apparel company.

Golden Boy and Affliction will be equal partners in a venture that will put on at least four multisport events starting in 2009, Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer said Saturday. Many smaller attempts have been made to pair the two combat sports on the same cards, but Golden Boy and Affliction hope to be the first to do it on a major scale.

“I think the two worlds have finally merged, and this is a perfect example,” Affliction vice president Tom Atencio said.

MMA exploded in popularity earlier in the decade with the rise of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, which dominates the sport. Affliction, a 3-year-old creator of Gothic-inflected men’s T-shirts and apparel, edged into combat sports by sponsoring both MMA fighters and boxers, such as middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik.

Affliction then decided to try MMA promotion after its shirts were banned at UFC events, staging a successful debut show in Anaheim, Calif., on July 19. But Affliction then postponed an event scheduled for October in Las Vegas, leading industry watchers to wonder whether the promoter already was in trouble.

Golden Boy, Oscar De La Hoya’s burgeoning promotions company, has long been intrigued by the idea of getting into MMA, with Schaefer driving the interest in its riches and loyal fan base.

“I think there’s a tremendous opportunity for crossover promotions, and to team up with such an iconic brand like Affliction is a big step for us,” Schaefer said.

Fedor Emelianenko, the vaunted MMA heavyweight who starred in the defunct Pride Fighting Championships, is expected to headline Affliction’s next show in January, which could be the start of its partnership with Golden Boy. The card’s postponement from October allowed time for Emelianenko’s injured hand to heal.

Affliction Clothing will produce a new line of boxing T-shirts tied to Golden Boy’s upcoming bouts, including De La Hoya’s fight against Manny Pacquiao, to sell in its retail outlets and at fight venues. Affliction also will make shirts featuring old covers of Ring Magazine, the once-powerful boxing journal now owned by Golden Boy.

Looks like Affliction is gonna have all the funding its gonna need now to try to become a major force.

Fight Night Sep. Houston Alexander with his deadly strikes,he need to learn ground gave ASAP or else he will be a stepping stone to everyone in the ground. If he keep that losing streak we won't be able to see him soon. I guess Eric Shafer learned something from Thiago Silva. Ed Herman vs. Alan Belcher, wow that was really closed fight. I've never been disapointed with Guida, lose or win. its always exciting to watch him fight, Guida's stand up & crazy hair style is like a young version of Evans Tanner (R.I.P.). Nate Diaz, move like worm in ground. Amazing jiu jitsu defence and his just like his brother Nick Diaz, Cocky mothafawker.

UFC 89...Bisping is in for a brawl with Leben. IMO, Bisping will keep shooting for take down, while Lebel look for knock out. It should be very interesting to watch, both fighter love exchanges and ground and pound. Bisping w/Unanimous decision . Jardine vs. Vera, it might be a boring fight to watch and it might end up 3 round with split decision by Vera. If Cane doesnt get knock out, Sokoudjou will lose by submission within 2nd round. If i have to guess what type of submission, it would be Kamura.

Whats your take on UFC 89?
Vlad
My take on UFC 89...

Leben wins by TKO in Rd. 2
Vera wins by TKO in Rd. 1
Sokoudjou by KO in Rd. 1
Kelly vs. Taylor... someone is getting KO'd, and I dont care who.
Lytle by Decision due to experience.

It was only a matter of time... when Kimbo Slice is your biggest draw, you have serious ing problems.

On the flipside, I hope Gina Carano finds somewhere to fight, cause I love seeing her.

Ha... I feel bad for him too, cause hes gonna be Anderson's muy thai knee bag.

Have u ever met GSP? I heard the guy parties like ing crazy.
elFreak
I never partied with him, but met him a few times and even shared a luxury box at a rap (don't ask) concert at the bell center. He was pretty quiet and did not even drink, his entourage though were slamming them back. He was also training for the Fich fight at the time, so that would probably explain the good behavior. He is a gentleman as far as i know though.

David Loiseau is another story though:p
