I get a call from some Indian accented person saying they want to verify my information. They start telling my name, address, phone number, etc., and I didn't even get who they're calling from. All I gave them were my birthday. They said I'de get a $40 gas card. It seemed like they already knew all my personal information, and they made it out as if they were verifying my info for a company I do business with. I didn't really connect any dots then, as I assume lots of American companies use Indian call centers to do these kinds of things, but I am just highly suspect of the intentions.
Has this happened to anyone. Should I alert the credit bureau and put some ID theft protection on my file?? |

Do you have a credit card or subscribe to any magazines? They usually give out your personal information to companies trying to sell you stuff. |

Yes I have, but the Indians who called me said they wanted to verify information, which they seemed to already know, but they did not offer to sell me anything. They offer a $40 gas card if I verified the information they already had. All I gave them was my birthday. |

Well yeah, they already had your information because you probably filled out a form that had fine print or a disclaimer that says you authorize the release of your info to business partners. The $40 gas card probably has strings attached. |

I heard you have to buy $200 worth of gas from the same station each month for a year if you use that card. |

| No. they play with the bits of attention they can easily get from 3rd party sources and then want you to fill the rest in for them. It's a quite common scam here. |
