DVD/Blu-Ray vs Download
View this Thread in Original format

Has anyone else just said " it" to buying DVDs/Blu-Gays and decided just to download the shows/movies from the internet? It seems pointless now to even own a DVD cuz it gets scratched the up all the time.

What you reckon? Do you think DVD/Blu-Rays are gonna end up like CDs which ended up like cassettes? Gradual phase-out? How long do you think it'll take until DVD/Blu-Rays phase out?

Blu ray dvd=50gigs (or maybe 30 average or whatever)
Concidering my net is 20/20 a month, thats a tad high to be downloading tons of stuff. So, for now with the cost of net, I'd say physical, theres also the fact I just plain prefer having the cd/dvd+case of stuff.

Can iPods play movies yet? I don't own one, so I don't keep up with the developments.

Since big-time storage is getting cheaper and cheaper, I predict that movies will soon (next ten to twenty years) be released primarily in the form of digital files rather than on physical media, similar to what is happening with music now.

It shouldn't be long before you can have a portable device capable of holding a few terabytes of data (which translates to a few thousand movies), and simply hook it up to a TV and play your movies.

Currently the main limitation on this stuff is simply net connection speed.

One solution would be to make today's "video stores" into net terminals with very high speed access, capable of downloading movies of your choice onto a portable hard drive, rather than just galleries holding a bunch of physical DVDs.

Oh ! I didn't know it has that much. Yeh maybe this phase-out will happen way into the future.

Yes they do. I finally caught up to the year 2006 and bought one, and then watched Reno 911 Season 5 on it on my way to Germany. It was awesome.

the issue is that, yeah, getting some random show you missed on the net is easy, but most people arent that savvy.

AND HAVE YOU SEEN 1080p? most people dont have a tv thats capable either...

the 360 is getting set up with dl netflix, so there is definitely gonna be a switch to mostly digital. but its the mp3 vs CD/DVD-audio discussion. there isnt THAT much of a difference, but there IS a difference if you are into that kind of thing.

mostly bluray should hang on for a bit just because of storage capacity and burning capabilities.

I have a PS3 and a 1080p TV , but I don’t have any movies on Blue-Ray. I cant imagine paying £10 for a movie when I can get 100Gb usenet account with giganews for the same price and download about 50 movies , 100 TV Shows and Albums with one click. Even DVD Rips are watchable and they are only 1Gb , in reality you could fit 50 movies on a Blue Ray disk so why just have 1 movie in better quality.

If it’s a good movie Ill goto a movie and watch it , if it’s a good rare album ill purchase it.

That's a attitude. How many awesome movies did you NOT see in a cinema simply because you'd never heard of it? How many albums have you ripped, that were great, though you never went and purchased them?

And what if these movies (this also applies to music) were in specific genres that you enjoy, but were not particularly popular with the majority of the population? Do you think you'll be seeing much new stuff released in that genre, seeing as how it makes no money (everyone just rips it off instead of supporting it)?

You're just ing yourself over.

And people complain that music/movies are so these days...

1. I use to buy DVD's at £19.99 for many years , I have a massive DVD Collection , prob around 1000+ DVD's I have spent thousands on movies that I have only watched once.

2. I have a shed with about 1000's of music albums all on CD which i use to pay £11.99 for each album .

All you need to do is watch MTV Cribs just to see that all these artists are overpaid.

Also were the hell do you store all the discs , im running out of wall space.

The future is downloading , its not my fault technology has won this battle.

LOL. You're going to use MTV as a benchmark? :wtf: How about the non-mainstream artists? You think they're rolling in cash?

You don't think artists should be paid? Musicians should, perhaps, just make music because they love doing it, not for any reward...
