Virus TI Question...

Am i right in thinking that the Virus TI acts like a VST and you can have upto 16 different sounds link to 16 different midi tracks which can effected using you DAW vst effects ??

I was thinkin of using the TI for all my synth lines and just using the DAW for all the sample based sounds, ie kicks, claps, hats etc..

Is this possible..

Yes, you've got 16 parts, but loading 5 massive sounds can overload your virus quite quickly, you can overload it even with 3 sound to be honest :P depends really how many oscillators and unison do you use etc.

Virus has only 3 USB outputs and yes, you can process each one separately with your vst/au effects. (you can cross any of the 16 parts to go out through one of those 3 outputs)

3rd thing, you don't want to use virus ti as your only synth, trust me. First reason is, that it has its character, and every sound in your entire track will have the same character ... which sucks, another reason is that the TI is not very stable and it induces latency, plus it may cause problems and glitches, so your best bet is rendering each part from TI anyway before the final mixdown of your tune.
No Left Turn
Yes. The "VST" is basically just a software controller for the Virus. You're still getting the sounds and everything from the Virus itself, just that you can tweak everything with the software (for those that aren't knob fiddlers).
Subtle
I can make that work easily with just a Virus B, some clever recording is needed though, but you probably dont want to use the TI for much more than the most important leads and pads sounds.

But with a TI, dont you have to bounce down what you have before you do the mixdown ?
csfp
You don't, but the usb midi synchronisation is so buggy that you want to bounce it anyway.

Firstly, thanks for the quick replies..

So you can only have 3 tracks from the TI on your DAW, but you can say put 3 sounds onto 1 output and use separate effects on each sound using the TI's internal effects ??

Correct. And, to clarify, you can have up to 6 tracks if you are using mono Virus patches. One last point, the TI's Virus Control software has individual levels and pans for each of the 16 parts, so it's a little more flexible than you might think.

You are right you don't have to bounce down which is why I love the Ti, but I have never experienced buggy synch even with projects using as much as 12 of the possible 16 channels. Some people have all sorts of issues with their Tis but I just did a lot of reading on forums and set it up in the most optimal way possible and I've never had any of the popping and synch issues I hear a lot of people talking about.

The sync issue only happens for me occasionally in Sonar when I start from a position that is in the middle of a Virus MIDI clip. It happens a lot more frequently and randomly in Cubase.

Yeah, it was really annoying in Cbs sx3, its a bit better in Logic but still its losing notes from time to time and may give some other glitches, so I try to render every part anyway.

And sometimes it freezes on a note so you have to use the panic button

But otherwise its a great sounding and versatile synth worth recommending :happy2:

in Cubase 4 it's always in sync here
Getafix
Yeah the latest OS works great here with Cubase 4 as well.
