i have the ESIs myself and their good compared to what i payd for them. u definitly need a sub too tho, i made myself one for practicaly nothing with great results. i dont know the other ones. u might consider save some more money for real monitors like yamaha, dynaudio and mackie

5 inch is too small to be useful for anything. using a sub isn't really ideal either.

get a pair of behringer 8 inch monitors, you wont find anything better for that price. imo, next step up is yamaha hs80m or event tr6. beyond that, you might as well save up and get a decent pair of adams, dynaudios or genelecs.

i dont agree there, 5 inch usualy has better upmid than an 8 inch for physical reasons, the 8 inch is to slow realy so u have to compansate for lighter more expensive materials in the driver which is probably done in more expensive monitors. 5" and sub works great here atleast and almost didnt cost me anything. i agree on saving some more.

integrating a sub is too subjective (imo) to be done correctly.

when you buy a set of monitors, you want the FR to be flat. when you add a sub, having the gain one mm too much or too little will destroy any chance of achieving that.

true, 5" will have better mids than an 8", but 5" will have NO bass. i think it's better to hear mids than no bass at all :D

well the worst thing u can do is buying cheap 8 inch caus u will have to toss them pretty fast anyway. with 5" u can copmliment with a sub later and still use em. another thing is that 8 inch monitors have more "smiling" curve and u will probably add up for that in your tracks so that your tracks sounds like a BP-filter (boost in the mid and no bass+treble). and thats the worst thing that can happen. imo...:nervous:

You should have the Samson Rubicons in your list too.

I increased my budget and went for the KRK Rokit 5's..

I must say i'm very pleased with them so far..

I have the Rokit 5s (the old boxier ones -- got a deal on them) as well. They are great.

I have the Event ALP5's and I can definitely vouch for them. The mids are absolutely superb. Excellent for mixing guitars, vocals etc. Highs are good too, low end isn't great but you can get used to this and compensate for it. Mind you, for a 5 inch they pack some punch - low end on all 5 inch monitors won't be great but in a small room (ie bedroom) you won't need any more. Very well built and they look good too.

The new Mackie MR series seem very impressive and are at a great 'starter' price. I wish they were around when I got MY first set of studio monitors!
