Drums -Random Variation

I know Cubase has a feature to add some random variation to timing but does anyway know of a way in Ableton? I cant find any vsts that will do the trick and I don't really want to resort to doing it by hand just yet.

I don't have the cash to drop on an electronic drum kit either.

i think that by hand is the way to go... it will be more random then any computer generated algorythm... :)

A solution would be to use the follow action feature in the session view.

What's follow action?

It's a feature in Ableton that allows you to determine at what probability the next action will be when the clip you played is over.

You can do all sorts of combinations (random ones as well as programmed ones).

And it works for any kind of clip, not just drums bt also melodies, voices, etc.

I'm not a big fan of follow actions but it can be useful when searching for inspiration.

Follow Action concerns launching clips. Not much help here.

Now that I have double checked I may have been wrong about Cubase having the feature. But that isnt important.

Isn't swing almost the same as just quantizing? Eg. Swing 8 = quantize to 1/16T?

There must be some kind of simple midi effect that can introduce a controlled amount of random timing.
Actually, just as I typed that I realised that unless it can somehow look ahead or pre-process the midi clip it cant example move notes forward in time...

Too bad kiddo cuz it's the only thing that could have helped.

If you want randomness just hit your keyboard randomly duh.

You could just move all the notes forward in time, and let the random process move them backwards by varying amounts. That'd let you have hits before, on and after the beat.

Thats good thinking, I feel stupid for not thinking of that...
Problem is I can't find a way to randomise it still.
I could just get BFD (has built in features for this) considering the price its a tad overkill though lol.

Stick Ableton's "random" midi plugin before your drum machine, you can get some proper randomness with that
Dont know what drum machine you are using but Battery 3 has some "humanise" functions as well which help to make things like timing, volume and pitch a bit more random

T-Soma
Ableton's random plugin is for a completely different purpose (changes the notes, not the timing).

The humanise feature is exactly what I am looking for, in fact a lot of drum apps have it. But I'm not going to pay $200 for it :toothless
It's strange that something so simple is so hard to find...
Owell, ill report back if I do manage to stumble across something.

Right ok, if its timing only well then thats a tricky one

As i said Battery 3 has that "humanise" feature where one of the options is timing, but its a lot to shell out for just that i agree

hopefully something will turn up, could be interesting for all of us!
