Looking for web based music / project collaboration software apps

Hey gang,

TA user KevyKev and I have started working on some tracks together, and are seeking a web based tool for managing / tracking our project files.

The idea is this: We have mirrored Logic systems. same plugs, samples, practically identical. We want to be able to trade project files back and forth to work on.

So you ask, why not just zip and email the file back and forth? What I don't want to happen is for us to inadvertently head down two separate parallel paths and lose work. say i come up with a bassline in the car and run home quick to put it in.. but in the mean time, Kev has been working for 3 hours over at his place. our files dont match anymore and can't be traded until we update one of them with the other's work.

I guess ideally I'm looking for a file repository system that will both version the uploads, and allow users to check in / check out files. if i 'check out' a file, kev can't work on it until i check it back in.

In the mean time, i've loaded dotProject on my server to try it out. http://www.dotproject.net/
It does what I described above.. but isn't very easy to use and is way too much for what we need. gant charts, calendars, tasks, etc...

Does anyone know of a better tool out there or (god forbid) a music based collab web app? I've gone through this but didn't find any music based apps.

thanks for any suggestions!
Stef
Personally, a good production friend of mine lives in Florida we just both work on stuff in shifts or whenever one can. Just hop on MSN and talk to each other and all should be sorted. But we use this file sharing thing called Dropbox.

Just watched the Drop Box intro video on the website... holy that is cool. Super thanks for the link~!

Do you work directly out of the 'drop box' folder so all your changes are uploaded instantly???

OT somewhat, but if you want to do live jamming, maybe try ninjam.

I don't know anything that's exclusivly for music collaboration, but at the University we have been working alot with a system called SVN (Sub Version) when we've worked on software programming in large teams. The system allowed us to do pretty much the same. Have all our original files on a server and commit the changed file when done so the newest file is on the server, ready for another team member to work on it.

Yeah, we use Subversion at work to track BluRay source code. I don't find it to be super user friendly... This DropBox thing though seems much sexier.

Thanks guys!

Funny you mention that... I've been writing apple for years asking for dual input device support in OSX. Even in person, you can't have two pointer devices hooked up doing 2 separate things.

There was even an old music program made in 1995 which worked over network and internet. You could both work on the same project at the same time. It was a bit buggy. But if it was possible then, why the #$%#$ isn't it now, right? :)

Haha yeah, exactly! :D I mean now almost everyone has got a pretty good broadband connection as well.. apart from back in 1995 xD So sending and recieving information shouldn't really be a problem now.. Strange why it isn't standard these days with this kind of support? ..
