AIG is more important but not the employees. They are expendable.

HP to cut 24,600 jobs

September 16, 2008

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Hewlett-Packard Co plans to cut 7.5 percent of its work force, or 24,600 jobs, seeking to realize savings from its recent acquisition of Electronic Data Systems Corp, the company said on Monday.

HP said it would carry out the cutbacks over the next three years, while replacing about half the jobs in new areas of its services business. It announced the plan ahead of a meeting with Wall Street analysts to detail the merger plans.

Nearly half of the job reductions will take place in the United States, the Palo Alto, California-based company said.

EDS was headquartered in Plano, Texas, near Dallas.

Yeah, I left AIG a little over 2 months ago. I worked under the Domestic Brokerage Group/Fusion. I e-mailed former co-worker friends last month to see how everything was going over there. Needless to say, 2-3 weeks after I left, everything started to turn to . They axed the entire billing department, management is getting completely restructured, and more firings are to occur. Because so many people have left this year and they have not been hiring, lots of employees are now handling multiple responsibilities from other departments. I emailed my former coworkers again today to see how they were holding up, but didn't get a response.. hope they weren't fired :(

I'm not sure how the work environment was in your area, but the management in our area was a complete joke. The combination of hardly any work to go around, irresponsible management, and a terrible IT department led me to spending at least 75% of the workday surfing the web. (I must add that they surprisingly ended up blocking the tranceaddict forums after 2 months of me pressing F5 900,000 times in the COR) It was easy for many people in our company to get comfortable in their position (many people in the same exact position for 3+ years), but I saw this job as a dead-end with no growth potential... also add the fact that I'd rather work my ass off rather than sit on my ass all day running out of espn articles to read.

I wound up on a job-hunting frenzy my last 4 weeks at AIG, and ended up accepting a position with Moody's in the city. I'm very satisfied with my current job and I consider myself a very lucky bastard for leaving AIG right before the meltdown. I plan on making the CFA I my bitch in June and hopefully working my way up through the ranks of the company.

I feel bad for many of the AIG employees that will end up getting screwed over, especially those that were nearing retirement. I hope that everything works out for you. Judging from some of your previous posts, you seem like a very intelligent person in regards to the capital markets... I'm sure there will be opportunities out there for you.
