So what exactly is a "Satanist?" I've never understood, and don't want to rely on the pictures in my mind. |
I need to preface this by saying that there is no strict definition of Satanist - and most modern, practicing Satanists in Western countries might be quite offended by me trying to distill their belief set and ethics down into any kind of broad generalizations.
First, and to be fair - there are several different general kinds of Satanists, and theistic Satanism does exist, but the dominant form of Satanism is the modern "Church of Satan" brought to prominence by Anton Lavey.
The best way to summarize such beliefs is that they are akin to Aesop's Fables or morality tales that arise from Greek or Roman mythology. They can broadly be described as anti-establishment or anti-authoritarian, but these might be too strong of terms and in general they are just against the notion of a herd mentality.
They do not believe in God or Satan as actual beings - but rather two opposing and balancing forces.
The Wiki page on LaVeyian Satanism is alright - but I don't know that it's entirely accurate (though the citations from the Satanic Bible are legitimate), but the following sums up their beliefs quite well:
| quote: | Nine Satanic Statements
1. Satan represents indulgence instead of abstinence!
2. Satan represents vital existence instead of spiritual pipe dreams!
3. Satan represents undefiled wisdom instead of hypocritical self-deceit!
4. Satan represents kindness to those who deserve it, instead of love wasted on ingrates!
5. Satan represents vengeance instead of turning the other cheek!
6. Satan represents responsibility to the responsible instead of concern for psychic vampires!
7. Satan represents man as just another animal, sometimes better, more often worse than those that walk on all-fours, who, because of his “divine spiritual and intellectual development,” has become the most vicious animal of all!
8. Satan represents all of the so-called sins, as they all lead to physical, mental, or emotional gratification!
9. Satan has been the best friend the Church has ever had, as He has kept it in business all these years!
|
And that's basically the cliffs notes. Intensely fun people to talk to, that's for sure. |

Interesting. Perhaps even less sensational than I would have liked :stongue: I've never met one, but that definately clarifies things.
Thank you. |

I generally refer to a lot of what Satanists believe as "common sense."
But yeah - the first things you'll learn if you ever meet a Laveyian Satanist are generally that they're totally normal, productive members of society who don't hold sensational beliefs and are generally more well read than 90% of the population (academics included).
Maybe it's just me, but the Satanists I've met - the real Satanists, not the girls in high schools who had uncles touch them in their no-no spot when they were five, have been an absolute delight to know and had a lot to teach me.
And have never once tried to convert me. :p |

There are two types of Satanists I know of:
LaVeyan Satanists (as Rob has outlined sorta)
Christian Satanists (may sound contradicting but they are the ones who believe in the Christian version of Satan and actually worship him and want "evil").
LaVeyan Satanists consider themselves as their own gods. They are the most powerful and best thing they know. They don't believe in a satan, but believe in the ideals of Satan as portrayed in the bible: being a defiant force. They also believe that the ideals of satan are a force of nature. They don't believe in any sort of afterlife, nor do they think you should commit to seeking your own death. They also do not believe in committing any deliberate crime (including drugs as it is a crime). They believe in indulgence as the corporeal is their heaven, and the nine statements Rob posted. They also believe that you cannot be converted into LaVeyan Satanism as it is something you look into and find that you already are, not that you work into. They're fun to be around, though a bit condescending and uppity at times. |

The Christian Satanists are an interesting breed, that's for sure - and I have never actually put any effort into learning much about them, much less known one.
Just know the basics, but yeah - odd lot, that. |

Then most satanists you've found aren't satanists at all. |

To be honest, I wouldn't even go so far as to say they tend to - because it's really even less than half of them that get too deep into the ritual stuff. |
