My work has a lot of marketing, communications, creative designers and we had to brand this new initiative. My gawd their designs rocked. I could totally see a huge difference between what I or many other photoshop hobbyist could create. SO I would take pro offers seriously, but yea, look at some previous work first n stuff.
oh and here is mine:

Depends how serious you are, you can laugh
but you have not done any research. Try to phone
up some local firms and see their pricing.
:)
its much easier to judge when you don't
take someone seriously, or when you are not
too familiar or respectful with a profession.
Go to a car dealership and laugh at the guy
when he says its 1200$ to repaint your car.
sure. you can do it yourself, but..
the difference is there. :)
all good guys,
have a good night :)

Hundred percent agree. My website is down at the moment. But there is a small selcetion of my work on my flickr account - http://www.flickr.com/photos/29577424@N05/
400 dollars is cheap. It really is, average designer will charge 20 pound an hour. What you would get for that is the knowledge, the passion and the awareness of what makes a good brand. not someone who can make a logo out of a downloaded font or play around with filters in a pirate copy of photoshop... |

you people realize i don't even really sell my music, and that this isn't my profession right? i'm not expecting to be the next big thing, i just like making music.
the dealership may charge $1200 to repaint the car, but if i'm driving a ing tricycle i don't think it'd really be necessary to pull out the big guns. i'm sure you're good and all, really, I am, but no way in hell am i paying $400 for a logo
summary: you get out of my thread |

I did say that on my first post. And I agree with you regarding that.
''If its just for yourself and to stick on your mix cds to your mates, just go to a number of type sites and buy a decent font or download a commercial free font'' |

hey if its worth $400, i'll pay $400
keep in mind that at in current financial state, in order for the logo to be worth $400 it would probably have to shoot blowjobs or something |

Yeah, that sites more to identify a font your looking for. A typographer or a type foundry who have invented the font, won't go around checking licenses etc..
Its diffcult to track fonts, a bit like pirate DVDs or say a DJ who is using illegal tunes.. People very rarely get found out. Sad, but true.. |

See think this could work but take off all the stuff and just have the lettering.
Personally I'd try to utilise the ZZ if you wanted could be ultra flashy with lightning or something. I mean if you break it up can be IR ZZ ME can mess about with that too. Or simple like this (one a sub note book so can't do it properly:

At $600 an hour this would have cost $50 lol :p |
