automating kontakt in cubase...?????

have kontakt running in cubase with an effect...which i would like to automate.... have pressed in write button at top of kontakt and made changes i wanted but when i put into read mode no changes were made.. so i went to drop down menu in cubase to show all automation and none had been made....
first time automating in kontakt..... am i over looking something or are things done differently
any advice would be very welcome
