Well the purpose of it is to have two different reference monitors. Actually the more the better. It also comes from the fact that many engineers in the 80's and 90's didn't like the sound of their yamaha ns-10's at all except for mixing. For a studio listening they were using something a lot more pleasing to their ears.
What you need is some interfacing/routing, hardware or software, that routes the main outputs to 2 pairs of cables/monitors.
If you are using a multi-out soundcard, I suggest you just send the content of output 1-2 to output 3-4, so no need to get a big knob from mackie, that is really good but pricey. There are multiple ways to route your outputs software-wise, depending on your sequencer of choice.

i think he means computer screens.
you need a video card with 2 video outs. most cards have this these days - one DVI plug and one VGA plug.
if you need to buy a new video card, two DVI plugs is better. |

| I manage my arrange window, hyper editor, piano roll, etc. in one monitor and plug-ins and metering in the other. Can't have it any other way! |

Depends how big your screens are. It used to be quite popular when the screens had reduced size, such as 15 or 17". Now you can get 22" with 1680X1050 reso for less than 200 bucks.
You can navigate between apps, or have more information displayed at the same time. Many tend to have their sequencer wide open on both screen surfaces. It is really up to you to know if you need it or not!

| I use two 20" wide screens and I would never go back to one monitor. It is great for producing but great for every day computer use as well. I get a lot of benefit out of two monitors all the time. |
