Thumbs up for the 80. I have that with an 18-135 f3.5-5.6, Nikon AF-S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR and a 50mm f/1.8D AF. Had I known the 90 was around the bend when I got the 80... I would have waited.

posting a compressed and downsized image wont justify a cameras image quality.

besides, the D90s sensors is far better than the D80s; less noise.

did you just buy a D90? :P

I'm guessing the D80 won't be available by the time I am ready to buy.. so I'll have to settle for the 90. :clown:

no, but the D90 uses a new sensor, similar to that of the D700, which both perform similarly to the Canon 50D.

The D90 I might actually end up buying, but there are a few things that are lame about it (SD Card? Wtf? SLRs should use CF cards..)

ok so, I dunno what you all think about Ken Rockwell.. but according to him, the D90 is in between the D3 and D300 in regard to high ISO performance.. :eyes: pretty awesome, imo. In general I think it's difficult to skew or bias an assessment of high ISO noise, so even if the D90 is close to the D300 or equal, let alone better, it looks like it's much better than I thought it was.

D90

The D90 is second best. The D90 has much more noise in the background, and pleasantly, it retains what looks like plenty of sharpness and real, live texture in the subject. The D90 seems a tweak oversharpened in the highlights, while that the darker right side of Mr. Monkey is actually noise, and not monkey fur texture. Look at the random pattern of dark spots in the darker fur, not seen in the D3 example. The D90 is doing a superb job of trying to fool our eyes while carefully alternating between real texture and random noise. I wouldn't mind this, so long as the background noise levels are OK.

D300

The D300 is next to last. D300 images at ISO 3,200 don't look noisy, but they do reduce a lot of the resolution and look more like an image from a point-and-shoot as opposed to a real, living clean image like what you get from the D3 and D90.

The D300 has about the same middle-frequency and chroma noise, but has smudged over all the fine monkey fur texture. The D300 image looks OK, until you compare it with the real texture in the D90 image. Much of what looks like fur in the D300 image is actually colored random noise.

The D300 image has also lost color and vibrancy compared to the D90 and D3.

Looking at exposure, the D300 isn't quite as sensitive as the D90; the D300 is slightly darker.

At ISO 3,200 you're making excuses with the D300, while the D3 still looks great. The D90 is in between these two.

SD card is not a shortcoming imo - and remember the D90 accepts SDHC cards. It's common for the consumer level SLR's (such as D90) to be SD, because those are more common.

they are not more common in the SLR world
SDHC maxes out at 32gb
SD cards cost more than the CF equivalent

no I meant they are more common generally, in terms of memory cards.

And no, SD cards do not cost more. If you're serious about data storage, you would be looking at Sandisk or Lexar or other higher end CF cards. A Lexar Pro 8GB CF goes for around $160-180. A similar Sandisk Extreme IV 8GB SDHC goes for $90. I know there are tons of cheapo cards out there but imo memory cards are not something you want to skimp on. Your mileage may vary but I have tried the cheaper cards a couple of times in the past (such as Kingston) and had them fail on me.

Is the resolution limited by the sensor size on this camera? I know for the Nikon camera it was limited to 720p.
The video looked great but the camera will be somewhat limited by memory. The good news is that memory is becoming cheaper and bigger.

100GB CF cards were announced today!!

Yes 100 is not a typo!
