As best as I can understand it, hipsters generally have very low self-esteem. They don't have confidence in their given attributes, but don't want to 'sell-out' to the corporate beautification mentality of high-class style (plus, they couldn't even afford it if they tried). So, they go the opposite way and intentionally dress in the most hideous styles ever conceived throughout history, making them even less appealing at face-value. That way, when you ask them why they would ever attire themselves in such a manner, they can pull the 'irony' card, thus suggesting that, if they chose, they could look rather decent. With luck, this apparent conscious choice might end up presenting them in a rather sophisticated light, making them appear attractively intelligent. Those who see through the charade, however, merely view them as hopelessly insecure idiots whom will look back on their hipster lifestyles with complete shame.
