Ethiopia supported the ICU's enemy, the Transitional Government (i.e. puppet regime).

Because the ICU supported terrorist separatists in the Ogaden... among other things.

Looks to me like a nationalist insurgency, rather than, terrorist movement...

You guys need to figure out the difference between freedom fighters and criminal terrorists.

I think if the Russians were smart, which they are, they should send a clear message to the pirates, We are going to kill you all! Sink the ship, pirates and crew! Also these pirates holding the Russian tanks and munitions for hostage along with the crew, send a Spetznaz team in or torpedo the ship, Make it clear to the pirates we will deal with you and this is how!

I think the military hardware is too valuable to simply sink the ship. Plus there are over 20 crew members held hostage.

What would be cool is if..

1. They brought a submarine in under the ship, out come a special forces team from underwater.

2. They quietly board the ship, and make it to the bridge, before all hell breaks lose.

3. Snipers in dingy's watch the ship and nail any pirates they see, one shot, one kill.

*Just got to make sure the ammo isn't touched, or it'll be the 4th of July on that ship..

But hey isnt that why these ships have insurance? Maybe they didnt renew there pirate insurance.

in all seriosness, The hardware is valuable as well as the crews lives, but I think Sinking the ship will really send a clear message to the rest of the pirates out there! Dont be a Pirate!

Gee, I dunno. Somali pirates have been able to get millions paid in ransom, I don't think you can expect prospective pirates to turn that down in such a sh*thole like Somalia. Like the drug trade, you can lock up as many drug smugglers you find, there will always be another to take his place..

Marine insurance is a very different animal. First, ships are generally insured for loss or damage to the ship itself; however, the Iranian ship is owned by a nationalized corporation. Most governments and state owned entities self-insure because a state can absorb losses more economically then their cost to insure would be. The same holds true for very large shipping lines. The article on the Ukrainian ship does not mention it's ownership; however, if it is state owned or owned by a large shipping line then it is likely self insured. Second, all cargo loads are insured on a one-off basis; meaning that an individual policy must be taken out on every load of cargo shipped. When it comes to things such as military arms cargo coverage is very difficult to get due to the value of the goods and it's attractiveness to pirates. Very few underwriters will write policies for this type of shipment, even fewer would write a policy that does not exclude piracy.

I still think sinking the ship is what should be done! Kill them all!

But what about the toxin on the Iranian ship? It could cause huge ecological damage if the russians sink the ship or if it gets damaged.

I suppose that's an easy call to make when it's not your ship, cargo, and you don't have to be accountable for the innocent people that would be killed.
