Anyone have good recommendations on where to get good bikes? My bf & I are about to buy some and we're browsing around but we don't know exactly what is considered a good investment.
I've heard lots of places are tricky cuz the bikes end up being cheapy and I want something to last.
I want something that is quality without a huge price tag. Not looking to be the next Lance Armstrong or anything :p |

Well. First thing, Lance Armstrong races 'racing bikes' not mountain bikes Lis :p
It depends on your budget mostly, each brand has a range going up the price scale depending on budget & style of riding. Since it's you and the bf, you're probably not going to want some trials type bikes (for stunts & ) but I'd say a Hardtail (front suspension only) is your best bet, or even a hybrid if you don't plan any off-road riding at all.
As the price goes up, the quality of the groupset goes up too, usually Shimano or SRAM, means lighter, stronger, better working bits. For a price of 800-1000 dollars per bike for example you'll get mid-range deore or LX components. For cheap bikes you'll get the very basic which feels rough as hell to shift gears & so on. It really is one sport where you do feel the difference in quality parts :)
Brand wise look for
Kona, Trek, Specialized, Haro, Gary Fisher & GT
They'll have budget bikes (from about 350-400 usd ish i think) to the 8grand carbon fibre race ones
And ygrene, whiskers & boomer are also very knowledgeable :) |

| Also check out local classifieds, you might find a good second hand one, give it a good service (mine costs £25 every 6 months) and it'll keep everything working how it should, replace any wear & tear if necessary & generally keep it well oiled which gives best performance from your parts :) |

| hehe well as a rule, each brand will have a bike at every price break, in GBP thats like under 200, 200-250, 300, 350, 400, 400-500, 700, 8-900 & 1000+ so there'll be a lot to choose from in that |
