why thank you very much selektah. i don't know how many tracks i assembled into the pool of tunage that was eventually whittled down to this set, though i think i'll need a raise before i can afford the level of beatport binging that was involved again. having finished it almost a year after undertaking it, and hearing what everyone here has to say, i'm know that all of those weekend nights in isolation paid off.
things get a bit interesting after the first hour or so, so i'm curious to hear your reaction to the rest. |

just finished it now and it lived up to expectations. there's certainly more of a 'story' element to the second half; i noted how it seemed to dirge out with some deeper stuff before building back up into more of a mainstream funky territory and finishing on what could almost be considered early-doors prog trance.. all expertly done. the last two tracks incidentally were the only ones in the set that weren't new to me (i'm pretty part-time when it comes to prog) so it was a very effective finish from my point of listening. i think the only thing that would have made it more enjoyable would have been more of a noticeable bpm increment, however that is completely a personal taste issue.
well done, i'd say the time certainly paid off :) |

you've made my day, sir. thanks a ton for the comprehensive feedback; that was just what i was hoping to hear. this story you referred to is ultimately the most important and challenging part of any set that I create, and this being my first mix that not limited to an 80-min CD-friendly format, i wanted to see how far i could push myself sans time limitations.
more than any other genre of dance music that i have played around with, progressive really gives the dj a lot of intrepretive room for creating something that can equal more than the sum of the parts. i had a great time working at taking my favorite tracks of the last few years and bringing them out in the best context i could provide, and even though i'm happy making music just for myself, feedback like this really is gratifying to receive.
incidentally, when i play live i inevitably find myself ending a few bpms higher than where i started, though evidently not so in the studio :)

The whole mix is great especially the second hour which has this "story" element isoterra told you about.
The only thing that bugged me was the flow. The 2nd hour it's like a new different mix starting all over again, from slower, deep and dark stuff (Minilogue remixes) to more mainstream stuff. You could seperate your mix in 2 parts and make them 2 nice sets. :p Mixing was really good.
It is good enough to keep this in my "best TA sets" folder for another listen. ;) |

Hey Cloud...sincere thanks for the nice words and constructive feedback, and I do not disagree with you in any way that there certainly are distinct parts and shifts in style around the areas you mentioned. My intention was to create a set that traversed the spectrum of emotion, going down as far as tribal can allow before later coming back up as high as possible to full on melodic prog. Interestingly, I felt that this movement occurred a track before the Minilogue duo...fascinating the differences people hear.
Nonetheless, being my first mix unconstrained by a time limit, I wanted to create as much contrast as possible through the use of the extended dark tribal section in order to make the shift back into melody that much more powerful. Structurally, everything up to Minilogue was a setup for the progressive melodic climax to come (typically no more than a track or two in my previous mixes, though given the time format possibilities, I stretched out to 7 much like a live set). Ultimately, I agree that it does come off as what you describe: two separate sections with an identifiable divide. However, I feel that the second mix wouldn't have the same impact without the first, and thus my desire to feature them as one.
This is why I love feedback, as it creates an opportunity to discuss and understand the musical interpretations of an uncommonly sophisticated genre of music that allows for a tremendous amount of creative possibilities and "ownership" on the part of the DJ. Judging from your feedback, you have an acute ear and perspective on the genre, so your inclusion of Redux into the "Best TA sets" folder is tremendously high praise.
