hi there. I was cleaning my harddrive (again) and found some strange files in the edonkey program folder. They are called "3.part" and "4.part" and are 680 MB and 350 MB large. Now that's over a GIG of space and I was wandering what these files do, cause I haven't downloaded anything larger than 30 MB.
does anybody know? why are they so large? are these because of my large number of shared files?
can I delete them?
thx for your help...

.part files in eDonkey are partially downloaded files and should live in the donkeys temp folder. but without a corresponding .part.met file they are useless for you.

if there is no .part.met file then these might be failed downloads.. -> disable the "save corrupted files" option.

i am not an e-donkey person, but that is prolly the case.. try and delete them, run e-donkey, if it still worx -it should- empty the recycling bin.. if they are needed, then you can restore them ! :)

thanks for trying to help, guys. But I guess I shouldn't delete them, in the \temp folder there is a txt-file by the name of "Don't mess with temp files!!!!!"
but it's freakin' ANNOYING, the folder with temp files is now 3.4 GIG !, i mean COME ON what the hell, I didn't try to download 238 livesets at once!
anyway, I'll head over to edonkey2000.de and try to get some help there. I just don't get how the temp files can be MUCH larger than everything I downloaded with edonkey combined???

I think these files are very similar to the audiogalaxy temp files, but why they are so big i dont know. If it was me i would uninstall edonkey and see if they get deleted then reinstall it to see if that made any difference, but if you get any advice from the edonkey fourms use that as id guess they know more than me!

I think you can delete the files no worries...

When it says don't mess with temp files, what it means is don't try and open them before the file is fully downloaded. Otherwise you could lose the whole download.

Remember that when it starts a download, it marks out space on the disk, so if you start downloading a 650meg divx or something, it'll straight away create a blank 650meg file on ur drive, then fill in the gaps as it grabs the chunks from other users....

a file that large probably wasn't in the install donkey program so it must have been something that grew larger and larger when you started using it. I don't think you really need it because it wasn't in the initial setup, unless the setup file was actually 1 gig...then thats a little different. The audiogalaxy log file is the same thing. 500mb txt file in the audiogalaxy folder...now thats like a good liveset right there.

start up edonkey and look in the download window, if theres nothing being downloaded then i can guarantee you 99% that you can safely delete those files cause they have no use to you at all
that txt file that tells you not to mess with part files is just there so you dont move those parts before the download is complete. you can always rename a part file if its an mpeg file and watch it/listen to it partially (i suggest making a copy of it and keeping the actual part file in the temporary folder so the download can be completed)
