people can interpret it however they want, its a piece of clothing and the black and white and red and white patterns are commonplace in the middle east. its only when a westerner wears it that any political affiliation is attached to it.
youre also giving the average hipster fashionista way too much credit by saying that there is anything other than aesthetics involved with their choice of accessory. |

It's as much a "fashion" for them as the blue and red bandanas are for the Crips and Bloods. It's worn specifically to denote an affiliation with Hamas/Fatah.
Although these are just the specific black-and-white and red-and-white ones - the keffiyeh itself has been around a lot longer than Palestine. But most people who wear it are wearing the B&W ones.
Reminds me of Homer Simpson picking up the Rastafarian hat at Lollapalooza. Just because you don't know what statement you're making doesn't mean you aren't making one. I admit it's not quite as douchey as those Chinese letters that actually spell "General Tso Chicken" when translated, it's not totally obvious that it has a different meaning, but nevertheless, it is not standard-issue all across the middle east as some people would like to believe. |

Those things became popular in Europe some time ago already (at least 2 if not 3 years). I'm surprised it's taken this long to hit NA.
I have a couple of them from Morocco, and I like them a lot! Funnily enough, I also paint my nails black lol Guess that makes me emo... :p although I draw the line at those ridiculously tight jeans. |

I was unaware that goods at H&M came with history-booklets attached to them that I should read before wearing.
Quite frankly, I just tossed all of the Keffiyeh's into the "Hipsters wearing scarves in the summer" trend and had no idea that there was anything to do with it being a Keffiyeh.
I didn't know what a Keffiyeh was until I saw a similar "wtf is up with kids wearing Keffiyeh's?" post somewhere else and typed it into google image search. I bet 99.9% of the kids wearing them are also thinking the same. |
