Today's tune: Jones & Stephenson - The First Rebirth (1993)
Trance is not all about sappy hands in the air tunes, nor is it played from 130 to 145bpm. Back in mid 90s, there were quite a few trance tunes that most of us think of trance, but were good tunes on their one.
I certainly got an education when a friend introduced me to Jones & Stephenson's Rebirth series. The First Rebirth is the most popular of the series. Slow build up with uplifting intro and hard bassline kicks in at 160bpm and fun wonky tunage continues to the end of the set.
The First Rebirth has been subjected to many remixes, (incl. John 'OO' Fleming, Yves de Ruyter, Antidote aka Airwave, etc) but none quite captured the essence of the orig mix.
Something completely different than typical trance for sure.
I'm also quite fond of second tune of the series, The Second Rebirth which I find to be as good as The First Rebirth. The Third Rebirth is decent as well, but skip the Fourth Rebirth and the Final Rebirth.

Can i add some too please?
How about ... ummmm....
Space Brothers - Shine (Oakey 12" Full Vocal Mix)

i'm glad there was mention to:
Aquanuts - Deep Sea (Martin Eyerer Remix)
i didn't like the original at all, but what martin eyerer did to this song is just WOW!!! quickly became one of my all time trance favourites, and even though i don't listen to trance as often these days, i still enjoying playing this one every now and then. One of the most mesmerizing intros in any trance song ever!!!
I love trance out of Scandanavidian (however you spell it) and Orkidea is the leading producer from that area. Utterly underrated as a DJ and a producer.
This is basically his claim to fame tune. There is no in your face vocals, or generic anthem trance. I find this more darker than typical trance with subtle blend of haunting vocal clip. Pain in the ass for DJs to try to mix in and out of the tune though.

I really wish that Sensation was like this today. Last year was the biggest piece of I've ever been to.
So jealous of 5 years ago.

Today's Tune: Cape Town - Skydriver (Urban Jungle mix)
Cape Town is a collab alias of one Laurent Véronnez (most famously known as Airwave, Lolo, The Green Martian and thousands of other alias) & Ludovic Meyer (less famously known as Ferry Tayle).
This one is close to my heart because it was one of first vinyls I got when I started to DJ. I didn't think much of this tune at first, but I grew to appreciate its qualities.
This tune is not going to get many plays in compilations. I don't think it's that well produced and you'd get bored of it after a few listens. But it is good, what I'd call 'uplifting' trance. It's happy. It's fun. It's nice to bounce around to.
I really like Cape Town as general (Stringrizer, Galaxies, Cinema) but this tune is my fav from that alias

Today's tune: Mauro Picotto - Back to Cali (Original Claxixx mix and Push remix) [2002]
Picotto is a legend. Though more known as techno DJ/producer, Picotto produced a lot of trance classics (Lizard, Iguana, Komodo, etc) prior to 2000. Back to Cali I think is last serious effort at trance by Picotto before he decided that he can make more money as a techno DJ (a bit of tongue in cheek there, but I actually like his techno productions more than his trance)
Back to Cali is an uplifting trance tune with that happy vibe. I find it simple in structure but it works.
Now Push (aka M.I.K.E) makes it less uplifting, and he gives it more of character with heavier feel to the tune overall. Quite similar to Madagascar remix in terms of mood.
Personally, I like both remixes and think they both work. Great tune by Picotto and excellent remix by Push
