Creating decent leads using Native Instruments

While back purchased Massive, Absynth, FM8, etc in the Komplete package.
Great atmosphereic sounds, great pads, great basslines, great unnatural percussive sounds, etc. but have made only a few good leads, most of them very harsh sounding. Can't seem to beef them up to get a beautiful lush sound.
Anyone have success with this? Even better yet can show me an example? Or should I move on to a new VSTi like Nexus or Sylenth (heard the demo songs for these on their websites; beautiful!). Any other recommendations? |

Nexus has nice synths if you don't really care about tweaking and all that.
Sylenth has the same capabilities (maybe less) as the NI line of synths. Just saying its not really better or worse, if you cant do it with an NI synth you prob wont do it with sylenth either.
And massive is a beast, seriously, more than capable of getting those lush leads you speak of. |

Its easy to make good leads in these programs. Keep going through the presets, there are some in there.
but it sounds like you have no idea about synthesis, and don't even know the difference between ROMplers and synths, so maybe you should look into that;) Alternatively, buy nexus since I hear it comes with a lot of the sounds you'd like, but no flexibility..
Oh, if your using massive, remember to get the modulation happening, and try changing the oscillator mode to bend rather than spectrum sometimes. |

I disagree. This is only true if you have no creativity. I stand by my often-made claim (as does my collaborating buddy) that no one has or ever will recognize a Nexus preset that we've tweaked using Nexus' built-in parameters (e.g., layers, filter, FX, LFOs, envelopes, arp) and used in one of my/our songs. You have even more possibilities using external plugins.
That said, yes I agree with your and other people's recommendations that if you want real flexibility and the ability to create those leads from scratch, the NI synths (esp. Massive) will do it easily. Go to NI's website and check out the Massive video tutorial for starters. Another suggestion is that you could buy/download a commercial or freebie set of patches for one of the NI synths (e.g., Vengeance Electro for Massive) and study the patches to see how they were programmed. KVR has a lot of user-contributed patch banks that may be useful (and free) as well. |

| you can do a lot with nexus for sure. but i would just stay away from this company on principle. |

| thanks for the suggestions! I'm gonna give the nexus and sylenth demos a try today as well as those kvr presets for massive. |

| i would stick to using the NI synths. You can do so much more than what you can with nexus. Nexus sounds very cheap in my opinion. All of the patches are completely covered in reverb and delay to try and cover up the poor sound quality. It sounds like they have only sampled 3 notes per octave. Its good for quickly jotting down ideas but i always turn to my other synths when its time to record. |

hehe completely agree--
i often record the synth notes etc with nexus, then turn to other vsts for the actual sounds i want to use for the track...
i've found it impossible to get really deep sounds with nexus' shallow presets that sound really cheap (apparently unless u layer them to hell, as cryophonik mentioned) |
