Johnny D bio

As the son of Eritrean refugees, Johnny D became acquainted with a wide array of music styles at an early age – from Tigrinya, the Eritrean music of his heritage, to hip-hop, funk and soul. During the breakbeat-craze in the Rhein-Neckar delta he first came into contact with electronic music at the age of thirteen, soon afterward deciding to take to the turn tables. His first electronic music sets at modest breakbeat events followed, and Johnny D. quickly developed into a versatile artist active in the Mannheim Collective.

He met Ray Okpara in 1999 by the good grace of their mutual hip-hop interest. They would both later organize the Rajo-Music house parties and spin together at the Loft Club in Ludwigshafen. Johnny D was also active in the Rhein-Neckar party scene as one of the co-founders (Ray Okpara, Federico Molinari, Nekes) of the Mannheim Zoo Club, which quickly rose to wild popularity with its rotating line up of national and international acts, and local DJs.

Johnny D’s style continued to develop under the influence of minimal electronic music, prompting him to try his hand at producing. His musical versatility makes it difficult to define his style, but one can safely locate his music and vinyl selection somewhere between deep-house, minimal, and techno. The outcome of this spectrum of styles is his own style which is arising itself on vinyl and affectionately arranged live acts. His first release Manipulation and Gualia came out on Oslo Rec., the label of his 2 good friends Federico Molinari and Nekes, in june 2007.

His last release on Oslo Rec. went to number one in the Groove Charts and a lot of people and many DJs give their respect to this great release called "Orbitalife". Since then Johnny is very busy in playing every weekend in the best clubs and festivals around the globe.

*FRIDAY NOVEMBER 7TH BLK|MARKET MEMBERSHIP's 50TH PARTY*

After 2 years and little bit more, Blk|Market Membership hits its 1st milestone and is proud to present its 50th Party in style. Still holding the techno torch that was handed to them by their friends and family at ROBOTS, Taimur+Fahad are going even bigger with their bookings and talents who inspire them as dj’s. We have searched and asked around as to who people thought would best fit our special 50th party and we came up with an amazing solution.

In our opinion we couldn’t have thought of anyone better to do such an honor other than one of the most in demand acts at the moment, Johnny D. His tracks currently are massive with all the house and techno djs all over the world and are appearing constantly in numerous mix cd compilations. Everyone from Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano, Craig Richards, Richie Hawtin, Lee Burridge, Andrew Weatherall to Danny Tenaglia and Sasha all are constantly hammering his tracks and remixes in their sets. Its safe to say that Johnny D has become such a big talent within the past 2 years mainly, that he has been very hard to book and get over stateside to play in the US due to him being booked constantly every weekend around the world. With a lot of convincing, he is finally coming and playing our party as part of his mini-tour in the U.S. The special treat we have for all of you is that he will not be djing, but will be doing an extended live PA set! Gui Gomez of Family Business NY opens and Taimur+Fahad close the night.
