I know that some of you probably have heard over the past year about the recent trash crisis in Naples Italy, I am currently stationed here in Naples Italy and want to share with you all on how bad the situation can be over here. Recently all our military personell living off the base which is estimated at around 8000 people will recieve free bottled water for drinking/bathing/basic cleaning. The water here even on the base where I live is very hard and is cloudy at best and turns all of our dishes white even after going thru the dishwasher. There are some days you can open the windows becuase the air is so rancid with the smell of Burning Trash and or Chemicals that actually make my eyes water, its trully horrible over here, so if you are thinking about Naples for a place to be stationed, think twice.

Below is an email that was posted to all members stationed here in Naples. I actually think that Naples is really feeling the environmental impact of the pollution here, and just becuase its not in the media, doesnt mean that its gone away.

Naples Public Health Evaluation Update 20OCT08

As the Naples Public Health Evaluation wraps up Phase I, sampling results
analyzed with U.S. methods continue to arrive
from the laboratory in Germany. 2348636

Results from new lease sampling are also being analyzed at the same laboratory
with results arriving daily. Last week,
NSA Naples Housing Office signed ten new leases - six on Wednesday, four on
Thursday. Meanwhile, testing continues with
Tetra Tech scheduled to sample about eight houses a day.

After houses are sampled, the specimens are tested for both biological and
chemical contaminants. Due to the perishable
nature of bacteria, biological tests are performed locally at NSA Naples
Hospital lab by Tetra Tech personnel. Chemical
tests are performed in Germany, analyzed to a level not available locally, and
aligned with U.S. EPA standards.

As an additional precautionary measure to ensure the safety and well-being of
our families living on the economy in the
Naples area, all homes under consideration for leasing by NSA Housing are
being tested. The full range of tests are
being completed regardless of the property's water source identified by the
landlord.

The Naples Public Health Evaluation is a comprehensive study of the
Naples/Campania region. It is assessing the overall
quality of tap water, soil, soil gas and air that may impact U.S. personnel
and their families living in the area.
Evaluation also includes three epidemiological studies: asthma, birth
outcomes, and cancer as well as reviews of Italian
studies and literature. When all elements of the evaluation have been
compiled and reviewed, a final report will be
completed and a plan of action defined and implemented to safeguard the health
of U.S. personnel and their families.

As an asside,

1 person murder, 100,000 people foreign policy would change if Vincent Bugliosi is taken serriously.

The guy is a lawyer from LA who's put together a book called "The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder" which builds a case that can be tried in any state of the US against Bush.

Most of it seems to hing on trying to prove / disprove that he knowingly lied about the reasons for going to war. In that case the war becomes illegal and the argument that Bush is on the hook for 100,000 deaths is fairly solid as far as I can tell.

Yikes, yeah, at my waste department we followed this issue. Indeed, very serious. I cant believe it hasnt yet been cleaned up or properly dealt with, the media frenzy died long ago.

EDIT: All I see is garbage in the photos. Does Naples actually have a recycling and/or organic waste program to divert from landfill? Just curious ...

The Neopolitans dont know what recycling is:toothless, Its actually scarry how waste management is run by the mafia. I am thankful I am leaving this place for good in 28 days from now to never come back again.
