iTunes alternative ?

i'm kind of a dummy when it comes to technology, even though i've been around it for ages.
my buddy just gave me the 20gig 1st Generation iPod and it's my first iPod. iTunes took over my computer and i hate it. i'm used to clicking and dragging tunes to my mp3 player, but this seems to upload everything on it's own.
is there an iPod alternative that allows the user to click, drag and drop the tunes from the comp onto the ipod, whether one at a time, or multiple files ???
if there is please let me know. i really appreciate the advice :)
