in melbourne, some retired army general made a rifle that could fire after being in mud, water, sand and . it was a bren style magazine, and never over heated. shot 7.62 (.308) nato rounds, and would rip anything apart. the Government reckons the rifle was too powerful for a foot solider, war is to make the otehr side lose as much money as possible, not the kill count. thats why it never went into production.

however an american company bought the idea off the brisbane guys (metal storm) after the Australian government said the same.

ing stupid government, letting our designs go overseas...

and the company in america bought the metal storm palns for 20 million, and the guy gets a cut from everyone built(not sold)

I think you're getting two different inventions mixed up. Metal storm technology doesn't use a magazine as such. O'Dwyer's gun has no moving parts, the bullets are stakced in the barrel with explosive charges in between. It uses electronic impulses to sequence bullet firing with such precision that 180 rounds can be fired in 1/100th of a second (thats 1080000rpm!). In terms of its potential effect on warfare the gun has been compared by some commentators to the development of the machine gun in 1862.

It was invented by a supermarket manager/inventor in Brisbane who was helped by a retired US army general to get funding from the pentagon. Metalstorm's CEO jumped into BRW Australia's rich 200 list after getting a huge grant from the pentagon and a substantial one from the Australian Defence department.
I doubt anyone could have bought it for 20 million. Last I heard Mike O'Dwyer (the inventor) was still CEO of the company, which was worth $234m (AUS)

Products under development include the O'Dwyer VLe handgun, an advanced sniper rifle, hybrid weapons incorporating both mechanical firing and Metal Storm technology, an "area denial" system to replace anti-personnel mines (unlike with landmines civilian casualties can be avoided). Other applications for the technology are foreseen in agriculture, firefighting, and fireworks.
