PARKING LAW NOT KOSHER

Orthodox Jewish residents of Williamsburg raised holy hell yesterday, slamming the city's Department of Transportation for switching parking rules during the Sabbath and then handing out more than 90 tickets.
The switcheroo - carried out at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, when observant Jews are forbidden to drive their cars - left many residents stuck paying the city's stiff $115 penalty.
The city's Department of Transportation said the changes were part of a long- term project to build bike lanes along the street.
"DOT gave advance notification to community leaders and . . . officials that signage would change," said spokesman Scott Gastel.
Nevertheless, he said all of the summonses issued on Saturday morning would be dismissed. |

| I don't really have an opinion on this matter, but it IS sad these days how local laws go binding without an official announcement that would get to everyone. My mom almost got a $500 fine a month ago for a law that was never even announced on TV. |

Does this mean they knew before the tickets would be issued or am I missing something. If no one said anything that makes sense in your case but they did and still are going to dismiss the tickets? |
