In the heat of yesterday's presidential election, there were two other votes that went unnoticed but are very interesting.
1) the state of California has voted to officially ban gay marriage. This is the state that was supposedly at the forefront of progressive thinking, especially regarding gays. Well, no more.
2) Possession of small amounts of marijuana is no longer criminal in Massachusetts! You can get a small fine and maybe have it taken away, but it's decriminalized now. |

On an upside, they passed a similar measure in 2000, by a 60% voting to ban gay marriage. This time in 2008 it was only 52% in favor to ban gay marriage. Opinions are gradually changing in favor of gay marriage.

Opposition against gay marriage drops 1% a year? Well, it's a shame just a few of us will probably be alive in 2060 to see that happen.
Yeah, I'm straight but I think gay people should be gaily gay! |

In line with other news:
York U has announced an official strike. As Canada's third largest university, this strike will affect over 60,000 people

The comments following the National Post article are particularly insightful. I knew the TAs were asking a lot in terms of pay, but I had no idea their demands were so ridiculous. Rumours keep flying around about the exact nature of the proposed agreements, but it seems to me that the TAs and part-time profs are asking too much- 30% pay increases or something like that.
At the same time, I feel the part-time profs have cause to complain... some of them have the same workload as full-time (just not the title) and they see something ridiculous like 30 grand per year.
I'm really sad for some reason. Not angry, just sad.
At least I only have an hour drive home and I can work during the time that classes are cancelled. I feel bad for the international students. |
