Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has issued her traditional Thanksgiving "pardon" for one turkey - while other birds were slaughtered in the background.
The former Republican vice-presidential candidate was doing her governor's "duty" to save one lucky bird at a farm in Wasilla.
But in the video footage of Mrs Palin, a man can be seen butchering birds in the background.
Mrs Palin did not comment on the slaughter taking place.
'Levity'
"This was neat," she told reporters, referring to her "pardon" of a turkey.
"I was happy to get to be invited to participate in this. For one, you need a little bit of levity in this job... It's nice to get out and... participate in something that isn't so heavy-handed politics that it invites criticism."
It is a Thanksgiving custom in America for the president and other officials to officially pardon a turkey.
The majority of the birds are not so lucky, however - the turkey is the traditional centrepiece of Americans' Thanksgiving dinner.
Mrs Palin was little known outside Alaska when Republican presidential candidate John McCain picked her as his running-mate this year.
Since losing the election in November, she has made a number of prominent media appearances, and observers suggest she is considering a run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012.

My God she is the gift that keeps on giving isn't she? First she has a PR ceremony to pardon a turkey, then gives a 5 minute interview with this stuff going on the background. I knew she was a ditz, but now I'm beginning to think she is truly braindead.

she's an avid hunter and was taught how to field dress a moose by her father at the age of eight. she's on a completely different plane of existence from the rest of you pussies. killing a turkey doesn't phase a person like that.

Whether it phases her is irrelevant - whether it shows good political judgment is entirely another thing.

I'm sorry to disagree with those that I usually agree with, but the fallout from this incident is retarded. If you didn't know where your Thanksgiving meal comes from, now you do. Accept it. The outrage that I've seen over this incident honestly disgusts me. There's nothing wrong with butchers or hunters. They provide the meat that I, and all of you, eat all the time.
Having spent time hunting throughout my life, I suppose there's something wrong with me snapping a rabbit's neck after I've shot it, or gutting a deer? The level of condescension over this whole issue is quite disturbing, to be honest. If you've eaten a steak or chicken breast over the past month, you've insulted every meat-eater and meat preparer with your holier-than-thou attitude.
Why can't we just let this moron wither into oblivion?

Because she is trying to run for President in 2012 and she keeps making mistakes. The controversy might be stupid (I agree with GHB on that), but its a stupid controversy that could have easily been avoided had Palin or her handlers had more political acumen than the turkey.
Zild
I love how she is so incredibly stupid that she doesn't even realize how highly unqualified she is for any public office. Everyone else they approached was smart enough to say no! I'm not qualified, so get someone else to make an ass out of themselves publicly.

i disagree with your implications here. while there is nothing wrong with you going hunting and doing your business in the woods or in the backyard, it is quite different to do it in public (or on TV) with many people watching who would rather not see it happen. I would be entirely justified in being outraged if someone decided to chop the head off of a chicken in the middle of the street in the city. It is irrelevant that it may be the normal procedure in butchering the animal; there is a time and a place for everything. killing things in public view is almost never the proper time or place to do so.

valiant effort, but it's a turkey farm ffs. the entire press availability was a tongue-in-cheek ceremony at a place where they slaughter fowl.
you're selective hyper-sensitivity to political acumen is more laughable than anything that could have happened at that farm.
