For the president, largest voter turnout in history. How about...

I realized this year during the presidential election just how passive the majority of this country seems about who has the keys to the government power, and quite frankly it amazes me. The United States is one of few Democratic Republics existent in the world today, and yet its inhabitants seem to care less about what they could do to improve - or at least customize - their surroundings. After all, isn't part of our reputation as the United States of America dipping our hands into anything we can... because we can? Thank whatever power you choose to believe in, because we actually have yet another chance to change - or at least check and balance - that which controls the environment we live in.

Georgia is fortunate enough to have a runoff election taking place on Tuesday, December 3rd. While you have the ability to write in whoever you want, the two main candidates are Jim Martin (Democrat) and incumbent Saxby Chambliss (Republican). The competition these men are participating in will never see as much prominence as the presidential election just passed - but in a sense - this is a bit more important to those in Georgia.

The Senate is arguably the strongest law-making power in the United States government. It presides over everything from local laws passed in Georgia all the way to what the nation does in Iraq. If you want any kind of support from your senator - whether it be for the legalization of weed or more affordable college - I suggest you participate in this election.

I strongly advise everyone to take a stand and exercise your voting right as a citizen in the state of Georgia. All it takes is a brief stop at the polls - and trust me - the line won't be endless as it was November 4th.

I thought voter turnout was lower. It was definitely lower in Georgia. In 2004 77% of registered voters in Georgia actually voted as opposed to 73% in 2008.

Was a lot higher nationwide. You just proved my point that we need to get people active. :p

politics, I'm way too sick of hearing about it at this point to care.

Bye bye legal marijuana, you stoner.
enydo
Hmmm in my experience it being legal or not really has no impact on the use of it, it's simply a matter of convenience.
:P

I'm also not saying I think politics are worthless, I understand the importance it's just that with the amount of political saturation lately I just don't want to hear about it much more.

Tell you what, if you vote on December 3rd, I'll stfu. :p
enydo
Oh, I wasn't really talking about you. Just venting really.

The idea of legalizing or decriminalizing marijuana is not for your convenience son.
:tongue2

Well yeah, I'm just saying it being legal or not doesn't matter much to me at this point. It would be cool if it was though.

Ga. congressman calls Obama Marxist, warns of dictatorship
The Associated Press
Monday, November 10, 2008

WASHINGTON — A Republican congressman from Georgia said Monday he fears that President-elect Obama will establish a Gestapo-like security force to impose a Marxist dictatorship.

“It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, he’s the one who proposed this national security force,” Rep. Paul Broun said of Obama in an interview Monday with The Associated Press. “I’m just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may — may not, I hope not — but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism.”

Broun cited a July speech by Obama that has circulated on the Internet in which the then-Democratic presidential candidate called for a civilian force to take some of the national security burden off the military.

“That’s exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it’s exactly what the Soviet Union did,” Broun said. “When he’s proposing to have a national security force that’s answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he’s showing me signs of being Marxist.”

Obama’s comments about a national security force came during a speech in Colorado in which he called for expanding the nation’s foreign service.

“We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we’ve set,” Obama said in July. “We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.”

The Obama transition team declined to comment on Broun’s remarks. But spokesman Tommy Vietor said Obama was referring in the speech to a proposal for a civilian reserve corps that could handle postwar reconstruction efforts such as rebuilding infrastructure — an idea endorsed by the Bush administration.

Broun said he believes Obama would move to ban gun ownership if he does build a national security force.

Obama has said he respects the Second Amendment right to bear arms and favors “common sense” gun laws. Gun rights advocates interpret that as meaning he’ll at least enact curbs on ownership of assault weapons and concealed weapons. As an Illinois state lawmaker, Obama supported a ban on semiautomatic weapons and tighter restrictions on firearms generally.

“We can’t be lulled into complacency,” Broun said. “You have to remember that Adolf Hitler was elected in a democratic Germany. I’m not comparing him to Adolf Hitler. What I’m saying is there is the potential of going down that road.”
