| this is easely done with windows cd (XP SP2 is what i got), u dont need to use any doscommands or anything, it has a good format and setup guide. just disconnect your HDs with important stuff on so u dont format those too. if u have sata disk u need SP2 CD i think. |

First thing before doing any with a windows xp disk:
find a way to get you data off the drive, otherise it could be lost. Don;t mess about installing other antivirus programs or trying to get system restore to work etc.
Firstly, if the repair does not work, you could not have a way to even boot the computer up anymore.
Secondly, if you've only got the OEM XP disks, it will not give you the option to press "R" for recovery. Only retail versions of XP do this.
disconnect the original (infected) drive, get another new drive and connect it to the computer then do a fresh windows install on it. Disable system restore. Get hold of and install a copy of nod32 antivirus (trust me - I've been through every other anti virus program and this is the only one that really does it.). Have nod32 activated, Now connect the old drive and copy over your old files. Nod32 will kill anything it finds as it's being copied. The reason you don't want ot try to run an antivirus program on the infected drive is that sometimes they have to delete the file to remove the virus, and hence you will loose some data. If this affects the data structure of the drive, you might not be able to retrieve anyhting, so do it copy over way.
Once you have copied over all the files, run an in depth nod32 scan on the folders you copied on to the new drive.
Now you can do a fresh format (delete existing partition) on the old drive and you will have a working computer.
this method is also good for you because it sounds like you don't have a backup of your old material anyway so one of the other spare drive can function as your backup. |

Oh sorry, didn;t get that - it then. just delete the partition and do a fresh install then install some antivirus program before putting you old stuff back on it. |
