im still very much in love with forged alliance (the best RTS title of all time) but knowing that there are plans for a sequel gets me awfully excited.

After promising for some time that it would start closer engagement with Western games developers, Square Enix has announced its first deal with a non-Japanese studio: a strategic partnership with American outfit Gas Powered Games.

The studio, headed by famed designer Chris Taylor, will develop the sequel to its Supreme Commander for the Japanese publisher.

It's the first step in Square Enix's plan to work with games firms around the world - for some time CEO Yoichi Wada has told investors he would work with Western firms either via partnership or acquisition to grow the business.

Until now, the company famous for its Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest brands had worked with Japanese studios, either external ones or those as part of its busy internal resource.

Develop also understands more deals between Square Enix and other developers in the West will be announced in the coming months.

“We see great opportunities in European and North American markets, both of which are expected to be maintaining sustainable growth over these coming years,” said Yoichi Wada, president and representative director of Square Enix.

“Therefore, it is crucial we create alliances with proven developers such as Gas Powered Games in order to serve these significant markets better by providing products and services in tune with customer tastes.”

John Yamamoto, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix and Square Enix, Inc., added: “Gas Powered Games is an accomplished development house that has demonstrated its ability to successfully create and develop intellectual properties.

“We are extremely excited to begin working with Gas Powered Games’ talented personnel and see this strategic partnership as a significant step in our efforts to bring Square Enix titles to a broader global audience.”

Gas Powered and Square Enix said that gameplay features, platforms and release date info on their first collaboration 'will be available at a later time'.

My thoughts exactly!

Still have yet to play the first due to the lack of a quality system to play it on, but that'll change soon thanks to my gaming PC thread.

remember, you want forged alliance (or the gold edition = both) rather than supcom.

Mr Game+Watch
Not into RTS in the slightest but I'm interested in seeing if any of S-E's design rubs off on the
game.

Is Forged Alliance a standalone expansion?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure my PC would explode even if I just put the CD in the disc tray.

yes. though you require the original if you wish to use all factions online (LAN and skirmish you can choose any)

my mate plays it on a p4 2.8 with a 6000 series vid card. it wont win any awards but he still manages to play ok.

the biggest problem for performance in FA is the bugged AI, but there are modded AIs that are better anyway :)

1. Sounds good. I'll be sure to pick up FA when the time comes...whenever that is. haha

2. Thats the great thing about PC games...the mod community. If a game is broken or has broken features, its most likely easily fixable.

pkcRAISTLIN
unfortunately FA doesn't have a huge community so mods dont really become that widespread :/

i dont really care though coz i just love 1v1 against human opponents. from that perspective the game is almost perfect, save for a few minor bugs (but we're expecting a new patch soon!).

after you've played it and really delved into the game, any other RTS title just feels shallow in comparison. played a game against my padawan last night, was neck and neck for 24 minutes with constant fighting all over the map.

never played an RTS title like it. love love love!!
CONNERMAN2000
I find that to be kind of surprising; I would have assumed their purpose for making Forged Alliance was because of good critical AND commercial reception of the original. Too bad the mod community doesn't see the beauty of the game like you do. I want to actually SEE this game (youtube videos never do justice!)...the PC needs a little bump first. :p
