Remebering the Heroes (soldiers)

So I tried finding a Remeberance Day thread to post this in but I couldn't find one other than the poppy losing one but I wanted to share this.

I saw this lady on MSNBC News where they did a whole story on the Highway of Heroes. It made me tear up so I decided to post a small clip of it here.

All the respect in the world to the soldiers fighting now and those that have lost there lives! And repect to those people that go and salute the fallen. It makes a real difference in peoples lives. Thanks!

Every year, the number of vets grow smaller and smaller. Although I don't know them personally, the vets that I recognize every year as we all go to the same Legion every year on Remembrance day grow less and less :(

It is really hard for me to listen to some of these stories of vets and soldiers who have been to Afghanistan sometimes. The emotional stress and many of them are forever changed by their experiences. I listen to some of my friends talk about what they did and I can see in their eyes that my buddy is still the same guy on the outside, but something inside, his experience changed him a bit, and he will live with this for the rest of his life.

So for those vets who have lived with their memories for all these years, I don't know how they could do it.

It takes extraordinary people to willing to volunteer to do something that most of us could not do.
For putting us before self, these people deserve our thanks.

I ensured we observed the 2 mins silence in our office, we turned off the lights and all 31 people participated. I remembered our freedom and thanked those that fought for it both then and now..

Then I cried, thank goodness the lights were off and my head was bowed.

The end of the 2 mins was signalled by 2 planes flying over, it was very moving.

I am a pacifist. One that is very grateful for those that have defended me so that I could become one.

Just remember that Remembrance day is for ALL the soldiers who have died from any conflicts...

It is based on the end of WW1 but we still salute even the ones who have died recently in Afghanistan...

And there is only one Canadian WW1 vet alive today...

John Babcock...108 years old...and lives in Washington...

I'll tell you that I insisted on observing our 2 minutes of silence on my job site...

My boss said he'd honor it but I was sure there would be a majority of idiots who refused...

So I climbed up on to the top of my crane at 11, turned to look at the guys pouring concrete, and was surprised that not only did they stop working, but they'd actually removed their hard hats and were standing, with their heads bowed, in silence...

It was nice...

Also, the Harvards did a great fly-by right over us...

Lest we forget...

In our office building, the 2 min were announced, and all took the moment of silence, even conference calls were started 2 min late. There was only the sound of the white noise from the hvac.

We all got the day off work since i'm in the Finance industry, but I made sure to watch the Service at Parliament on CBC. It was a very nice ceremony and would have been great to attend.

I don't if this was true, but they said that there was only one vet left from World War I and they had a little thing of him handing off the torch to the a vet from WWII.

Personally, I believe that Remembrance Day should be a stat holiday like it is in BC and I believe some other holidays. I think it is more important that we remember the soldiers who fought for our country and gave their lives for us, than having random Civic Holidays that are about nothing.

I believe its a holiday in all provinces but Ontario and the Territories

Unfortunately, I was unable to mark the two minutes at exactly 11am due to work constraints. I did, however, take a few minutes to go sit in the woods adjacent to the hotel and reflect silently.

Later, I paid my respects at a cenotaph and laid my poppy on the marker.

All that can be said has been said, so I'll simply say 'thank you' and 'Lest we forget'.

May we all live in peace.

It wasn't in Alberta. At least when I was living there.
I always remember being in School and having a moment of silence at 11am.

Edit: According to Wiki, it is a stat day for Western & Atlantic Canada. Everyone but Ontario & Quebec.
